Pelosi sees ‘drastic’ troop cuts by mid-2008

WASHINGTON - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi predicted Thursday that there would be “a drastic reduction in troops” in Iraq by the middle of 2008, saying Democratic opposition to the war had “changed the debate on Iraq in our country.”

In an interview airing Friday on MSNBC’s “Hardball,” Pelosi, D-Calif., told host Chris Matthews that while Democrats may have failed for now to force President Bush to agree to a timetable to withdraw U.S. troops, their agitation for disengagement from Iraq had backed the president into a corner.

Pelosi noted that Bush yielded to pressure from members of his own party in accepting benchmarks of progress that the Iraqi government was encouraged to meet to keep U.S. support.

The benchmarks in the emergency appropriations bill Bush signed last month were pushed by Sen. John Warner of Virginia, a highly respected Republican expert on defense, so “the president ... does have to answer to the benchmarks in the bill that passed,” she said.

“In either case, I think he’s in very bad shape,” she added.

There are no ifs, ands, or buts about that fact, TUT. Nancy Pelosi has made a fool of herself and, in the process she's made fools of those of us who believed she and Harry Reid were going to be effective in stopping the Bush administration from continuing to rape the world.

Yes, very true. However, while criticizing the Democrats in Congress for not fighting hard enough to stop the bloodbath, let's all take a deep breath and remember who really has blood on their hands, the Bush administration, and all those who support the murderous neocon imperialist tyrants.

All well and good, but if the Dems had sent the exact same bill to the WH again and again until the public realized it is Rs who want this war, we wouldn't have to sweat it out about who will win the WH next time.

If the public sees the country goes whichever way the Rs want it to go, who do you think they will vote for?

People vote for winners, even when those winners are killers.

I also think that those Republicans that are now supporting Bush would've quickly abandoned him (except for a stubborn few) if they'd seen that the Dems really meant business on Iraq. The war is far too unpopular. Those rats aren't going to leave their ship until it actually starts to go under. Bush must have convinced them that he had put a plug in the ever expanding hole.
