Intelligence and Honesty, two wonderful traits to possess- in a way that leaves it open to political affiliation.

"While in our private life nobody except a mad person would remain passive in view of a threat to our total existence, those who are in charge of public affairs do practically nothing, and those who have entrusted their fate to them let them continue to do nothing.
"How is it possible that the strongest of all instincts, that for survival, seems to have ceased to motivate us? One of the most obvious explanations is that the leaders undertake many actions that make it possible for them to pretend they are doing something effective to avoid a catastrophe: endless conferences, resolutions, disarmament talks, all give the impression that the problems are recognized and something is being done to resolve them. Yet nothing of real importance happens; but both the leaders and the led anesthetize their consciences and their wish for survival by giving the appearance of knowing the road and marching in the right direction."

Erich Fromm. (1976). To Have or To Be?

Thought some of these were very good and apply to much of today.

A child miseducated is a child lost.
John F. Kennedy

A man does what he must - in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures - and that is the basis of all human morality.
John F. Kennedy

A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.
John F. Kennedy

If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.
John F. Kennedy

Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.
John F. Kennedy

Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind.
John F. Kennedy

My father always told me that all businessmen were sons of bitches, but I never believed it till now.
John F. Kennedy

Too often we... enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.
John F. Kennedy

The very word 'secrecy' is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths, and to secret proceedings.
John F. Kennedy

"Did you know, when President Bush is in Australia, his approval rating goes down the drain counter-clockwise?" --Jay Leno

"I learned today that President Bush is a sensitive man. There's a new biography of the president out in which he says 'I do tears,' which means he cries. And he says he cries a lot, and I think it's kind of nice hearing that the president cries. It would be even better to hear that he reads." --Jimmy Kimmel

"How about that President Bush, he makes that surprise trip to Iraq. Was pretty impressive don't you think? He spent a few quick hours visiting with the troops, and then he left. You know, it was just like his days in the National Guard." --David Letterman

"Over the weekend, of course, disgraced Idaho Senator Larry Craig resigned after Republicans refused to defend him. Yeah, Republicans were not happy with him. Yeah, the Republicans' last words were 'don't let the men's room door hit your ass on the way out'"--Conan O'Brien

WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

The entire book is at the link.

I don't care for the site, but the book is great.

"Several Jewish groups are upset because President Bush issued Rosh Hashanah greetings over a week early. So they're saying that Bush doesn't know when Rosh Hashanah is. Bush says he'll make up the mistake by sending them all something nice for Christmas" --Conan O'Brien

"In his latest video, Osama bin Laden urges all Americans to reject democracy and convert to Islam. Well, I can see that happening. Is this guy living in a cave? ... No, bin Laden said he wants Americans to convert to Islam ... because there are no taxes in his world. Which is true. There's also no music, no ice, no books ... and from the looks of bin Laden, no toothpaste or deodorant either." --Jay Leno

"The general testified yesterday before the Senate. After listening to him, Senator Larry Craig said, 'I'm feeling a surge of my own.' ... Senator Craig from Idaho is blaming the media for his guilty plea, especially that cute guy from the Associated Press." --David Letterman

"I guess the Secret Service had a little scare yesterday. ... For a couple of hours, they could not find President Bush. Turns out he was just hiding behind General Petraeus." --Jay Leno

"In a free society, there comes a time when the truth -- however hard it may be to hear, however impolitic it may seem to say -- must be told."

It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has 'closed', the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. At the start of every "This Day in History" there are at least three notable quotes.

OOPS!

Can you also post the THIS DAY IN HISTORY quotes in this thread? Cross posts are acceptable if they're warrented. :P

Quotes give us something to talk about when we come into the CHIT-CHAT BAR and it's almost empty!

APL, I love those notable quotes you have in every "This Day in History"! Never thought about putting them into the notable quotes thread though.

Nice idea Catherine.

I thank both of you dear ladies.

Rather than clutter up this thread, I will be posting the quotations as separate non-sticky threads. Those that generate discussion will stay on top, less deserving ones will get their due and sink down the list.

Just because something doesn't get comments doesn't mean it isn't worthy. Some of the most worthy words I have read are ones to think about, not necessarily comment on.

Look at how jaspar's pieces are repeated throughout the site but not commented on in his forum.

Sometimes thinking is it's own reward.

The exchange between Churchill and Lady Astor:

She said, "If you were my
husband, I'd put poison in your tea."

And he said, "If you were my wife, I'd
drink it.""

Gladstone, a member of Parliament, to Benjamin Disraeli: "Sir, you will
either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease."

"That depends,
sir," said Disraeli... "On whether I embrace your policies or your
mistress".

My favorite Churchill quote:

Churchill: Madam, would you sleep with me for a million pounds?

English Lady: Of course, sir.

Churchill: Would you sleep with me for one pound?

English Lady: No! What kind of woman do you think I am?

Churchill: We already established that, we just were dickering over the price.
