It just dawned on me that there may be two levels of justice meted out when it comes it comes alcohol/drug abuse and internet addiction at work.

In that, and I may be totally off base, but it seems that employers are more equipped to deal with alcohol / drug abuse problems at work by offering employee assistance programs.

But when it comes to internet addiction, the employer is more apt to monitor you and confront you punitively, rather than offer the same sort of employee assistance.

True or not true?

Article: Caught on the Web.
Quote:
... an estimated one in eight people show signs of addiction to the Internet.

...

Blocking sites containing sexual content, gambling and gaming remains important, especially for legal protection, but this measure represents only the first step to curbing Internet abuse in the workplace, experts say. HR professionals also need to:

# Educate managers and employees on the signs of Internet abuse.

# Create better policies regarding what employers expect from employees' use of the Internet at work.

# Offer resources to employees who get caught in the web.

"Companies just haven't done enough about Internetabuse," says Kimberly Young, director of the Center forInternet Addiction Recovery in Bradford, Pa. "You could have a guy sitting there surfing the Net 20 to 30 hours a week who gets no discipline, and have another guy looking at porn one time and getting fired. But, actually, it's the first guy who is abusing it more in terms of productivity."

I work and surf at the same time at work, but the problem is I get my work done (and a lot of personal stuff and research done too.) If I have a major project to do , I leave my desktop and phone and go to a work table. Otherwise , I sit at my PC and phone with "ordinary tasks". Please help... I multi-task work /personal together and am afraid I will be bored out of my gourd if I get in trouble for multi-tasking. What would I say?... the truth, that I'd be bored at work without the internet?
