COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — The founder of the Minuteman Project, the anti-illegal immigrant group, endorsed Republican Mike Huckabee on Tuesday, while Huckabee dismissed a presidential rival's immigration criticism as the work of "the tattletale in the third grade."

At a news conference hastily arranged to cope with a crippling ice storm, Huckabee brought out Minuteman head Jim Gilchrist, whose private group patrols the Mexican border on its own to keep out illegal immigrants.

"For months now, I've been searching for a candidate to support for president of the United States," said Gilchrist. He said he settled on Huckabee as the candidate whose plans were most likely to halt "this illegal immigrant invasion problem."

BURLINGTON, Iowa—Wait, was he supposed to do that?

Mitt Romney got a surprise endorsement on Saturday from the Rev. Morris Hurd, chairman of the Iowa Christian Alliance, a prominent conservative Christian group in the state, as he introduced the former Massachusetts governor at a rally tonight.

Officials with the group typically avoid making public endorsements because of their tax-exempt status, but Mr. Hurd blurted out his decision tonight in what felt like a bit of an accident.

Some of the Catholic churches and the rightwing ones too, openly endorsed Bush over Kerry on '04.

Guess it isn't against religious law and that is the only ones they seem to care about.

Monday night Rudy Giuliani visited a famous Philadelphia cheesesteak restaurant that serves as much controversy as it does calories.

Geno's Steaks has been a famous Philly hot-spot for years. It was thrown into the headlines last year when the owner posted a sign at the counter that reads, "This is America. When Ordering Please Speak English."

The national spotlight on the restaurant and its owner, Joey Vento, came at a time when both the media and Congress were fixated on illegal immigration - a subject that Republican candidates have been returning to in the past few months.

He also once told a reporter that Mexicans carry disease into the United States because they “play and drink out of the same water.”

The Rev. Lou Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition -- a relentless campaigner against what he calls "the homosexual agenda" -- embraced Romney as a family man "who will give this nation the direction that it needs."

Romney was pro-choice and a supporter of gay rights when running for governor of Massachusetts. He speaks now of having experienced a personal epiphany when confronted with the question of whether to sign legislation legalizing stem-cell research in Massachusetts.

Social conservatives like Reverend Lou Sheldon and Bob Jones III, and pro-life leaders and attorneys Jim Bopp, Jr. and Jay Sekulow and others have been supporting Governor Romney for quite some time.

President George W. Bush hit his lowest rating ever in an ABC/Washington Post poll released Tuesday, showing him for the first time below 33 percent approval.

"Just 32 percent of Americans now approve of the way Bush is handling his job, while 66 percent disapprove," the poll says. "Bush's work on the economy has likewise reached a new low. And he shows no gain on Iraq; despite reduced violence there, 64 percent say the war was not worth fighting, 2 points from its high."

The poll further shows that 77 percent of Americans believe the country is on the wrong track, topping a record high in early 1996, when Republican congressmen shut down the federal government in a dispute with Democrats over funding.

Bush's approval ratings have been consistent for the past nine ABC/Post polls, staying between 33 and 36 percent in 2007. While this new poll is not statistically significant, it represents Bush's first rating below the one-third mark.

Presidents Carter, Nixon, and Truman each endured a low water mark of approval lower than Bush's (at 28 percent, 24 percent, and 22 percent, respectively), but the length of Bush's slide, with three years below majority approval, has him approaching Truman's record of 38 months underneath the polls.
