Do you ever wonder if their parents allow them to watch nothing but violence on television and play violent games on their computers? They don't seem to have any regard for the other little human beings except as obstacles in their paths. Can you tell them that, if they want a Valentine's celebration, they'll have to demonstrate that they
deserve to have such a privilege?
I used to tell my students early in the school year that my job was to teach them the NC standard course of study and their job was to learn it. The NCSCS did not include parties and other types of privileges. Whether or not they got privileges was entirely up to them. The power to CHOOSE had just been given to them along with the responsibility of the results of their choices.
It worked for me but didn't always work for other teachers.
