Turbulent Times in N.Y., L.A. Newsrooms

It’s been a lively week in the newspaper world, and the excitement hasn’t exactly been of the desirable variety. Earlier in the week, Tribune Co. Chairman and CEO Sam Zell (whose “unconventional” leadership style has caused upsets in Orlando and Los Angeles newsrooms) announced major cutbacks at Tribune papers across the country, and then The New York Times’ Valentine’s Day edition brought word that the Gray Lady will also be downsizing its staff.

Ahh, there's what we need. Less news.

And they will come after the internet. True news is what they hate most.

NY Times 'bracing for bloodbath,' columnist says

NO, not THAT kind, but it seems that the newspaper world is being hit by Bush's "NOT A RECESSION."

"The New York Times newsroom is bracing for a bloodbath in the next 10 days."

So says NY Post columnist Keith Kelly.

The word from inside is that approximately 50 unionized journalists have accepted the buyout proposal, and only another 20 non-union editorial employees have gotten on board.

That means the ax could fall on as many as 30 editorial people in the company's first-ever mass firing of journalists in its 156-year history.
