US Lawmakers Invested in Iraq, Afghanistan Wars
By Abid Aslam
Inter Press Service

Monday 07 April 2008

Washington - U.S. lawmakers have a financial interest in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, a review of their accounts has revealed.

Members of Congress invested nearly 196 million dollars of their own money in companies that receive hundreds of millions of dollars a day from Pentagon contracts to provide goods and services to U.S. armed forces, say nonpartisan watchdog groups.

David Petraeus, the top U.S. general in Iraq, is to brief the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees on Tuesday and Wednesday. The latest findings are unlikely to have a significant impact on this week's proceedings but could stoke anti-incumbent sentiment in this year of presidential and legislative elections.

Lawmakers charged with overseeing Pentagon contractors hold stock in those very firms, as do vocal critics of the war in Iraq, says the Centre for Responsive Politics (CRP).

I wonder how much media has invested?

It is very likely that he didn't have to front a single dollar. The stock and stock options he holds were very likely awarded to him as a consulting "honorarium." This is the dodge that high-ranking military get before they retire and work for the defense contractors directly.

I wonder what the world would be like today if RFK had been elected instead of assassinated, or if the real president Al Gore had not been cheated out of his rightful win in 2000.

Harry and Ike are probably turning in their graves!

RFK approved the FBI wire tap on Martin Luther King. Those taps apparently showed that Mr King was having an extra marital affair.

I'm not sure that wire taps are needed to find that people have inappropriate sex.

As to the original post: This is what happens when our Congressmen and Senators are generally required to be rich. Many/most rich people will sell soldiers for profit. Its good business.

The Imperial Palace of Iraq

Nothing says the U.S. will be in Iraq for the long haul more than the construction of the largest embassy in the world, a $474 million compound with 27 different buildings, 619 apartments, and an Olympic-size swimming pool--all, of course, for a country with 26.7 million people and 115 billion barrels of proven oil reserves.

McSame must be loving this!

The $474 million embassy was designed and built by the First Kuwaiti General Trading and Contracting firm.
Kuwait, who currently host 15,000 U.S. troops,
has won the bulk of U.S. contracts given
to foreign companies in Iraq.

Rubber-Stamping ‘Failed’ Iraq Projects

The special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction has found a disturbing trend among Iraq rebuilding projects. Far too often, when work is incomplete, U.S. officials will revise or “descope” the terms of the contract to list the project as completed. One example: A $35-million children’s hospital in Basra that is marked completed despite the fact that it’s only 35 percent up and running.

Private Contractors ‘Mismanaged’ $23 Billion in Iraq

A BBC investigation on U.S. war profiteering estimates that $23 billion of taxpayer funds has been “lost, stolen, or not properly accounted for in Iraq.” The figure, which uses U.S. and Iraqi government sources, is meeting resistance from the Bush administration, which pushed through a gag order in dozens of court cases involving the alleged mismanagement of funds by private contractors.

ONE MORE THING THAT NEEDS A CLOSE INVESTIGATION...BY CONGRESS!
