It has been said in some christian circles that man is the way he is because god created man with "free will". I'm struggling with whether that really is a good thing.

Free will is supposed to mean that man decides, and not pre-destiny, on his own what his actions are. To me there's a flaw in having that much free will.

As we've seen, many men have used their free will to do many bad things to his fellow man, other living things, and his environment, as well. God has given man enough free will to hang himself, and man has obliged by bringing himself to that brink many times.

So, is free will really such a good thing?

While free will allows unmitigated evil to exist, it also allows unlimited good. Many religions talk about the trial of life. My personal view is that life is an opportunity for growth. Without free will, life would be pre-ordained with no chance for unlimited growth. As much as I detest the evil doers as the scum of the earth, I appreciate the chance to grow and learn. Without free will, life would be as an automaton living out my programming. Stated another way, free will is what gives my life meaning.

If you believe in god as creator, why weren't we designed with the will to do only good?

Why were we created to go either way?

Man either evolved or was created, whichever turns you on, with the unlimited characteristics. We have both love and hate, the desire to create and the desire to destoy. Whether we choose one over the other because of environment or predestination has been studied and argued forever.

Evil exists. Some people appear to have nothing beyond evil. I tend to believe it is part of them like the color of their eyes or whether they will be slender or chubby no matter what they do to change.

Without free choice we would be the same as birds, fish and animals who do what they are programmed to do no matter what.

All we can do is try to promote good and point out evil. If it scares people to believe they will not go to a promised land in the sky if they are evil, all the more power to believing in the sky god.

I think I want what the birds or fish have, to some degree.

Unless I'm mistaken, one won't go off on the rest in a killing spree.

While I'm unsure about birds, fish are some of the strongest practitioners of cannibalism in nature. A shark is the prefect-eating machine that will when gutted and still alive turn around and eat its own entrails. I much prefer the intellect that comes with free will to the instinct and inability to learn without it.

Well, maybe what I really want to be is a salmon or a dolphin.

I heard the Pope was praying to his god for people while in the states. If these people have free will, then god's prayers aren't going to work, are they?

Has god made free will stronger than his/her own will? The free will of the Iraqis to kill each other in their civil war is stronger than god's will to stop them. The free will of GWB to be as effed-up as he can be is stronger than god's will to crack common sense into GW's thick skull.

Without darkness, there could be no light. Without evil, there could be no good.
