I took a short trip and found reason fro both optimism and pessimism.

The optimism came from viewing some television for the first time in almost a year. Advertisements were ripe with messages about better foods and a better environment.

The pessimism came from:

Finding that the Dept of Wildlife apparently did not try very hard to help the Colorado deer and elk herds with a savage snowfall.

The road crews worked on a mountain pass enough to see that a helicopter could land close to some cabins. Do only those with helicopter access to their cabins matter?

The resort got conned into installing "high efficiency 1.6 gallon per flush" toilets. Toilets that actually take 3 gallons per flush. Mine had a valve that stuck every time so it used hundreds of gallons/day unless the operator removed the top and adjusted the valve....after every flush.

As I think about 3/gallons per flush toilets passing themselves off as 1.6/gallons per flush...I realize the toilet manufacturers ethics are in the sewer.

What do you think about the cops who shot the groom and groomsmen 50 times as they were leaving their bachelors party and completely unarmed? Then were found innocent by the "judge".

You make many great points. I feel a level of disgust that I have to step away from at some points because I let the whole thing overwhelm me into deep depression too easily.

The cops getting off is despicable. But...

But what?

Shooting unarmed guys 50 times? I don't know the details but it doesn't sound good.

I remember when this idea of saving water this way first came out, the city of Sunnyvale California went around putting bricks into the tanks of all the toilets in the city. Results: less water per flush but the bricks eventually eroded, ruining the flush mechanisms of the toilet and clogging the sewers. Retrofitting doesn't work, the toilets need to be designed from scratch.
