STAMPS ARE GOING UP!

With a postal rate increase just two weeks away, Americans are buying 30 million Forever stamps a day.

The cost of sending a first-class letter will rise a penny to 42 cents on May 12, but the Forever stamps — currently selling for 41 cents — will remain valid for full postage after the increase.

Forever stamps were introduced last year and since then more than 6 billion have been sold, with interest growing as the rate increase nears.

One more way the government picks our pockets?

I thought they raised rates pretty recently.

I was thinking the same thing, PT. Didn't they raise them in Jan. or something?

You think with the ease and freeness of email that the postal service would do something to entice customers, rather than do more to push them away...but then, of course, they also have to pay for gas, so maybe that's behind the new increase.

Postage rates last went up in May 2007, with a first-class stamp jumping 2 cents to the current 41-cent rate.

While the first Postmaster General was Benjamin Franklin and was a cabinet post, it was the original victim of privatization. When the conversion occurred, they lost their exclusive right to carry letters, with companies like UPS and Fed-Ex being allowed to compete directly where they couldn't before. Postal workers are no longer government employees. Many delivery and carrier personnel are contractors having to fend for themselves when it comes to things like health insurance. The forever stamp was designed to front load their coffers while giving the illusion of saving money for the consumer.
