Sportscasting legend Jim McKay, famed for Munich coverage, dies

Jim McKay elegantly covered competitions from badminton to barrel jumping. Yet he may best be remembered for that grim day at the Munich Olympics when he broke the news with three simple words: "They're all gone."

The groundbreaking sportscaster died Saturday of natural causes at his farm in Monkton, Md. He was 86.

McKay was the one who spanned the globe to bring television viewers the constant variety of sports on ABC's influential Wide World of Sports, where he told of "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat."

Jim McKay was an excellent sportscaster. I will always remember his Munich broadcast and his announcing the "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." To me, Jim McKay was the best Olympics host, too. He'll be missed and I'm sorry he's gone.

I'll echo your sentiments about Mr. McKay. He was a great Olympics announcer.

If a guy lives to be 85 or more, I consider that a pretty good run. I wanted to break longevity records until our lives changes so drastically.

I still go through the motions with cod liver oil etc. But living under a police state is...suffocating.
