WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE NEWS?

Quote:
Independent, aggressive and critical media are essential to an informed democracy. But mainstream media are increasingly cozy with the economic and political powers they should be watchdogging. Mergers in the news industry have accelerated, further limiting the spectrum of viewpoints that have access to mass media. With U.S. media outlets overwhelmingly owned by for-profit conglomerates and supported by corporate advertisers, independent journalism is compromised.

Ultimately, FAIR believes that structural reform is needed to break up the dominant media conglomerates, establish independent public broadcasting, and promote strong, non-profit alternative sources of information.

This is why we need the Fairness Doctrine again.

TVNL Editor's Comments: Record High Political Reporting – Record Low Information Provided

While the establishment news bozos bedazzle the American public with what appears to be be obsessive coverage of the 2008 presidential campaign little if any useful information about the candidates is being reported. Don't take my word for it.; take your word for it. Ask yourself if all of this establishment media news coverage you know one thing more about any of the candidates that really indicates what kind of president he or she would make?

I'll tell you what you don't know...you don't even know who is running! With all of this extra time, almost an entire extra year of campaigning, the so called journalists of this nation should have done their job and informed the electorate about their political choices. You know nothing about Mike Gravel or the extremely popular and respectable Ron Paul. All you are told about these candidates is who is leading in the polls. Two years away from the election you are told who is leading! Why? The only reason they tell you this every day is so that after the election you will have enough historical reference to make you believe that the pre-selected winner was actually popular enough to win. Then you won't question the voting results!

You hear gossip and poll results. You never hear about the positions of these people, their history, the links to lobby groups, their past efforts to fight for the citizens or their past actions that have resulted in defying the desires of the citizens. You hear nothing that helps you know about the people who are trying to take over our government.

With two years of coverage every American should be able to name every single candidate, not just the few establishment cronies. You should also know something about the candidates other than how much money they raised, how much their hair cuts cost and whether or not they are electable. If we had journalists in this nation WE would decide who is electable! It is not their job to tell us who is electable and that is exactly what they are telling us.

In their own way, right out in the open, the establishment media are telling the American public who the preselected candidates are and they will tell us who the next preselected president will be. It is a conspiracy. It is obvious. It is out in the open. And it is undeniable. The media are part of the establishment and they manipulate you into believing that you are part of a democracy or that America has some sort of representative government and the damn truth is that both notions are nothing more that a false reality created and maintained by the establishment media! You don't have to believe me...just pay attention and you'll see it for yourself! Think about it! Jesse Richard – Editor, TvNewsLIES.org

Yes, I second that .. The system is broke, but the media keeps telling people it does not need fixing. It is fair and decent ... Ha! The made for TV switch game, where you will be told who will be what and when. A controlled system and media. Is this an unfixable monster? This is a system that fools people into thinking that everything can be fixed by just outing Bush & Chaney or (if you like,) the Neocons. This isn't a disadvantage for our controllers, it is an advantage. They can shape or mold this whole ball of wax into some new set of advantages. In other words, they just create a new monster. A new gang of crooks, A North American Union or whatever. Don't get the idea I'm a Bush fan, I'm not,
but how do you work within the constraints of a corrupt / broken system and win? You can't!

Britain, Australia and a few other countries had a system whereby the Corporate media was controlled by state media organisations. Like the BBC, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation was financed by the government, fiercely independant, had no advertising, and had a board of directors who were elected to this position by the Australian Broadcasting Commission - the regulatory body for all media in Australia.

Because of this the ABC ran programs like 'Mediawatch' that made fun of the Commercial stations if they lied, exaggerated or gave views reflecting vested interests. For years, Australians after seeing an item on the commercial media would immediately flick to the ABC to see what they had to say about it.

During the 1990s, even before John Howard came to power, the ABC was squeezed with budgetary cutbacks, conservative stooges were elected to the board, and the ABC changed into a second rate channel whereby any brave program director who spoke out found his/her program on the chopping block. Now the ABC supports the government on just about everything.

It was a shining beacon for the world and I believe that the idea still is. A TV and Radio network fiercely independant from commercial or political interests whose purpose is to keep the bastards honest.

However, liability must be returned to the corporate structure along with the possibility of prison sentences for the directors should the corporation break the law. In addition, their status as legal 'persons' must be removed.

There is a real danger that as the media outlets establish what is acceptable, not by gaining public approval, but by a repetitive process of unfairness and by making the problem so nebulous that the dissenters are forever distracted from one topic to another. Those of us who fight for a fairer, just and democratic world are losing.

The media are not the problem but rather the result of the problem where honour, justice, truth, fairness and goodwill must all be secondary to profits.

I can scream about the stolen elections and the voting machines, the build up to the Iraq War, the war itself, rendition, torture, the doubts over 9/11, and the fearmongering of the media at large. There are almost as many causes as there are people and the secret to seeing a change rather than a constant dispair every time we switch on the news is to pick one cause - any one of them and unite.

More voices is fine , but when the major " news " outlets are in collusion with the Government and the majority of people get their news from TV , that is where the major problem needs to be addressed . In my opinion , the collusion needs to be exposed and changed , I.E. CNN 's Barbara Starr the " only " reporter invited to follow the Pentagon , during their propaganda tour in Africa , while she omits U.S. complicity and collusion with the Dictator from Uganda , omits U.S. backing of Ethiopia attacking Somalia and being charged with killing & raping civilians , to her absurd comments " charges of civilian deaths are always controversial " in Afghanistan , we'll of course they are , that's bcs that's the way the story is always framed , to question , to obfuscate , TO CREATE DOUBT , bcs we know those natives , oh they be making up all kind of wacky stuff . And when the media has the power to dictate who is the ' worthy victim " is or not , it allows the government to continue their blood soaked foreign policy and what will they do when the citizens of the U.S. are the victims ?
