Myth: Americans tuned out Iraq Fact: The press tuned out Iraq

by Eric Boehlert

News consumers' interest in Iraq remains relatively high, while news coverage has basically vanished. How's that for a disconnect?

In one article, Wash. Post contradicts own suggestion that Dems responsible for "torpedoing" three FEC nominations

Summary: In reporting on former Justice Department lawyer Hans von Spakovsky's decision to withdraw from consideration as a nominee to the FEC, The Washington Post's Paul Kane wrote that "Senate Democrats had refused for a year to confirm von Spakovsky, torpedoing the nominations of three other nominees."

But later in the same article, Kane contradicted his own suggestion that Democrats were responsible for "torpedoing" the other nominations, reporting that Republican Mitch McConnell "had demanded that the entire slate of bipartisan nominees be considered at once or that they be voted on in bipartisan packages of two nominations."

The problem is the journalists of today function as parrots and incapable of doing an analysis of the news that would have pointed out the fallacy of Dems blocking the nominations. Since when are nominees the ones to set the rules for confirmation? Never have nominees been considered in tandem and such a thing is just a promotion of qualification or guilt by association.

Summary: An article in The Hill stated that there are "some marked differences" between bills offered by Sen. Jim Webb and Sen. John McCain addressing benefits for military veterans. But the article cited only one difference and did not mention the ways in which Webb's bill is more generous to veterans than McCain's.

Hill article on differences between Webb, McCain GI bills failed to note more generous benefits in Webb bill

Media advance false claim that Obama's reported transition plans are unusual or unprecedented -- but Presidents Bush, Clinton, Reagan, and Carter also planned ahead.

Are we to believe that McSame isn't also planning ahead?

Well, stud...keep on reading!

That was then ... Matthews lauded "experience" of Bush's Cabinet picks in 2001, but says Obama's selection of prior administration vets is "crap"

Summary: Amid reports that President-elect Barack Obama has decided to nominate Clinton Justice Department veteran Eric Holder to be attorney general, Chris Matthews criticized Obama on Hardball: "You could do this in any bureaucratic state, you could do it in the old Soviet Union. ... You don't need elections for this crap." But in 2001, Matthews said of George W. Bush's Cabinet picks, which included veterans of past administrations: "There's some real heavyweights in terms of experience."

Ever heard of Jonah Goldberg? Apparently, he's been doing his best to bring propaganda to new heights about the Obama administration. Read Boehlert's analysis of Goldberg:

Quote:
What happens when media monitors mangle journalism in ways far more severe than the work they're supposed to be appraising? What happens when press critics, instead of calling out newsroom missteps, simply propagate their own blunders in the name of analysis? When they weigh down their critiques with blatant misinformation?

I especially enjoyed how Boehlert reamed Goldberg with this summary:

Quote:
To recap: Goldberg's media critique began with an outright falsehood about Obama and FDR. Goldberg simply ignored scores of media reports (including one from the right-wing Washington Times) that suggested Obama's press honeymoon had been surprisingly brief. The first journalist Goldberg cited by name as being liberally biased was a TV personality who was "no one's idea of an objective reporter" and whose quote Goldberg culled from an appearance on a comedy show. Goldberg made up a story about Obama walking into a window and then criticized the press for not covering as news the story Goldberg concocted. And then Goldberg ended with a two-word quote from CNN's John King that only Goldberg seems to be familiar with.

And for the record, in a column supposedly brimming with "examples" of Obama's press honeymoon, I couldn't find a single one that withstood the slightest amount of scrutiny.

The painful lesson for USA Today? When you hire Jonah Goldberg to be a press critic, you get what you pay for
.

Jonah Goldberg, a god-awful media critic

(Also at the link, Goldberg responds to Boehlert's column, and Boehlert answers back.. )

I predicted A DECLINE in news coverage on Iraq and avoidance of the word occupation , because most Americans really don't care if U.S. troops are still kicking down doors there, still operating prisons in Iraq and now they are manufacturing consent for Afghanistan the so called " good war " . All Imperialist governments require a complicit media and the case is the same for Somalia , where u.S. backed Ethiopian troops are going on a continuous rampage , killing and raping and the U.S. planes are bombing the country , most going unreported , as well as GAZA , which ALL major networks started censoring several weeks ago .

Interesting information, Kahoneez...can you please show a link (or links) to all that? If you made your prediction online, regardless of where, I'd be keen to see it.

By the way, would you please check your private messages? Thanks.
