Great Presidential Pets

Quote:
“If you want a friend in Washington,” Harry Truman famously quipped, “get a dog.” Presidential pets have long been thought of as symbols of their owners, every slobbery greeting and crooked whisker treated to near-exegetical analysis of the wiles, whims, and demeanors of world leaders and politicians. George W. Bush’s feisty Scottie was moved to violence at the end of Dubya’s second term, while Caroline Kennedy’s pet pony, Macaroni, was the dream toy from Camelot. The Daily Beast explores how Bo fits into the pantheon of first pets.

Bo's a cutie, but I can't help but contemplate what a coup it would have been for animal shelters all over the nation if the Obamas had rescued a homeless dog.

Indeed..., even though there are fees to pay at animal shelters when a dog is adopted, but it isn't much.

NOW, however, the puppy mills will be doing a booming business, breeding more of these types of dogs. Instead of a coup for the animal shelters and common, ordinary dogs who need homes desperately, Obama has brought a coup to one more type of "elite," and often shady business.

As someone said recently, "What kind of change is that?"

As a sufferer of allergies (like Obama's daughter) and a lover of dogs, I can attest to the requirement for a dog that is hypoallergenic. My wife adopted a couple of kittens that resulted in a declaration from my doctor, "Get rid of the cats or die." Fortunately, I was able to find them a good home with my boss. The way I understood this story is that they not so much bought the puppy but received it as a gift from Ted Kennedy. The acquiring of truly hypoallergenic dog from the pound would problematical at best and God forgive the uproar of having to "trade up."

As an aside, I always preferred LBJ's Bassett Hounds.

Yes, I knew about the allegy issues and that the dog was a gift from Ted Kennedy. I wonder if anyone else close to the Obamas offered puppies as gifts and this one just happened to meet all the criteria.

I did read that the Obamas are trying to do "damage control" by making a donation to the DC Humane Society. :P That's good! AND signifies some change, I guess. I'll bet Bush never donated to an animal shelter in his entire sorry life.

I was going to adopt a German Shepherd. The adoption fee was $150. It has gone up.

They turned me down because I said it would be outdoors much of the time in the summer. Well the backyard is 100 feet deep. It is dog heaven. I also said it would be both a pet and guard dog. Isn't that what people normally expect from German Shepherd.

Talk about humiliating to be rejected by a place for rejected pets.

I had fancied myself to be an almost ideal dog owner. My dogs have been as happy as can be.
