Witness those who created a slogan on Cafe Press: Biblical anti-Obama slogan: Use of Psalm 109:8 funny or sinister?

A nice sentiment?

Maybe not.

The psalm reads, “Let his days be few; and let another take his office.”

These bible literalists thought they were being cute by intimating harm on our great president. But what they failed to consider was that verse was used to describe dyed-in-the-wool naysayers -- like those literalists. :roll:

That is why until Martin Luther took advantage of the printing press to put out a Bible in the local language, it had been in Latin only, read and interpreted only by the clergy. Thus, they held considerable power in the temporal world and well as the spiritual one since there was no one to contradict their proclamations. For me a particularly egregious case was the trial and execution of Joan de’ Arc, an illiterate peasant girl who was expected to know the intricacies of the Old Testament. She was convicted and killed by the English version of the Inquisition because she had the audacity to lead French troops to victory over the English, nothing holy about their actions.

Today’s version of the Inquisition, the Bible thumpers and misusers known as the Religious Right, seek political power and monetary gain at all costs. They know their religious front is a sham, so it is no holds barred while they manipulate the sheeple. Let’s hope one of these crazies don’t take the Psalm literally, or Obama will have yet another parallel to JFK.

Olbermann and/or Rachel Maddow should take on this attempt to call for harm against the President. Or have they and I missed it?

I know Maddow talked about it at length. Maybe you could find it on her website, but it would take time and I know time is in short supply.

Religion has a dark side and, as we have bitterly experienced, religious extremists can be deadly. But, as Park 51 and recent congressional elections have demonstrated, no thanks to some politicians and bigots, religion can be also be exploited to feed division and hatred.

Politicians like Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin and Sharron Angle grabbed headlines, using Islam and Muslims as convenient scapegoats. Gingrich, in a speech at the American Enterprise Institute earlier this year, created a reality that doesn't exist by calling for a federal law barring U.S. courts from considering Islamic law as a replacement for U.S. law. Sharron Angle nearly topped him when she falsely suggested that Frankford, Tex., and Dearborn, Mich., were subject to a "Sharia" regime. Voters in Oklahoma and Louisiana were similarly concerned about the "creeping in" of Islamic law. Oklahoma State Question 755, which passed, asked voters where state courts should be forbidden from considering or using Sharia." In Louisiana, several bills were passed that ban international law from its courts. The bills do not mention Islamic law expressly, but the motivations to "protect" U.S. law in Louisiana were reportedly the same as in Oklahoma.

Americans...more and more of them are making ignorance a real virtue!
