Why the Democratic Party Has Abandoned the Middle Class in Favor of the Rich

In 2008, a liberal Democrat was elected president. Landslide votes gave Democrats huge congressional majorities. Eight years of war and scandal and George W. Bush had stigmatized the Republican Party almost beyond redemption. A global financial crisis had discredited the disciples of free-market fundamentalism, and Americans were ready for serious change.

Or so it seemed. But two years later, Wall Street is back to earning record profits, and conservatives are triumphant. To understand why this happened, it's not enough to examine polls and tea parties and the makeup of Barack Obama's economic team. You have to understand how we fell so short, and what we rightfully should have expected from Obama's election. And you have to understand two crucial things about American politics.

The first is this: Income inequality has grown dramatically since the mid-'70s—far more in the US than in most advanced countries—and the gap is only partly related to college grads outperforming high-school grads. Rather, the bulk of our growing inequality has been a product of skyrocketing incomes among the richest 1 percent and—even more dramatically—among the top 0.1 percent. It has, in other words, been CEOs and Wall Street traders at the very tippy-top who are hoovering up vast sums of money from everyone, even those who by ordinary standards are pretty well off.

Second, American politicians don't care much about voters with moderate incomes.
Princeton political scientist Larry Bartels studied the voting behavior of US senators in the early '90s and discovered that they respond far more to the desires of high-income groups than to anyone else. By itself, that's not a surprise. He also found that Republicans don't respond at all to the desires of voters with modest incomes. Maybe that's not a surprise, either. But this should be: Bartels found that Democratic senators don't respond to the desires of these voters, either. At all.

Wow! Great article.!

Thank you Catherine, for finding this. Although it is depressing, it does explain what went wrong. It just doesn't explain how to remedy it...

I thought it was an excellent piece, too, dori...and yes, very depressing, especially when we see the AMERICAN ARISTOCRATS behaving more and more like AMERICAN ROYALTY WHO BELIEVE IN THE DIVINE RIGHT OF CONGRESS CRITTERS AND THEIR CORPORATE FRIENDS! Didn't we fight a Revolution to rid ourselves of that kind of suppression?

However, maybe the "Middle People" will get fed up with being shovel-fed the rich Republicans' poop someday...no wait...I forgot...there's still Faux Noise and Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann and Rush Limbaugh and the Chinless Wonder, Mitch McConnell and his Boy Wonder, Paul Ryan and the governors of the RED STATES who are racist pigs.

Randy Rhodes had a good piece on her radio show today. It is supposed to be on her Homework page but her website isn't working. I am having a terrible time with this ISP so don't know how long I have to look for that piece.

Yes, Catherine, I am constantly amazed people listen to the rightwingers and believe them. I remember growing up, terrible people hated FDR and fought his programs. And groups of people would come out of no-where it seemed over the years fighting anything and anyone wanting to make life more livable for more people. I never dreamed we could fall so far down the hell hole as we have now.

The thing that gets me the most is that so many people have had life fairly livable yet have no feelings of compassion for others. The people in this area act like they need to put sheets over themselves and burn some crosses on lawns. But they go beyond racism, they seem to be filled with hate for anyone who has less than they do themselves. How do people get so small?

I am just happy I lived during the best days of the U.S., I feel for the kids of today. It isn't going to get better without a huge fight.

Civil War, anyone?
