The protest was filled with the usual mix of Occupy Wall Street supporters. But there was also a smattering of people wearing T-shirts with trade union logos as well as ordinary working New Yorkers.

In front of dozens of members of staff, Mark Campbell, an activist on Kurdish issues read out a statement on behalf of the [Kurdish Youth] group, accusing the Turkish government of perpetrating a war on the Kurdish ethnic minority, who mainly live in the the eastern half of the country

Campbell, 49, who has been an activist on Kurdish issues for 18 years, also criticised the Guardian in the statement for not covering the plight of the Kurdish people and that of the leader of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers party), Abdullah Ocalan.

Ocalan has been held in prison since 1999 for leading the PKK in a violent struggle against Turkish authorities

5 American tanks eliminated as IEDs hit convoy

HELMAND, Aug. 01 –

Reports from Nawzad district say that IED’s planted by Mujahideen struck a US military convoy travelling from Shurab airfield to Nawzad district center, eliminating 2 US tanks yesterday in Surkhak and Darazdan Karez areas

while 3 more tanks from the same convoy were destroyed this morning in Darazdan Karez area.

All invaders onboard the tanks were killed and wounded but their numbers are not known.

Witnesses from the area say that the convoy has again come to a stand still and is surrounded by IED’s.
