Gabrielle Giffords Resignation: Congresswoman Officially Leaves House Of Representatives

WASHINGTON -- In an extremely moving moment on the House floor, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) submitted her resignation to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) Wednesday morning after making the announcement in a video Sunday.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) began the process by asking unanimous consent to speak out of order. She then praised Giffords, calling her "the brightest star this congress has ever seen."

"Your legacy in this congress and your leadership in our nation will certainly endure," she said.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) then paid tribute to her. He said the House is "inspired, hopeful and blessed" for the "outstanding progress" Giffords has made in recovery.

Senate Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) praised Giffords. "She has become an example for us ... for indeed all the world. Of courage. Of clarity of purpose. Of grace."

"Gabby, we love you. We have missed you," he said.

MORE AT THE LINK...AND A SAD DAY, INDEED. And it's one time in which the Speaker's tears were probably genuine.

Yes, the Speaker wasn't crying about himself for a change.

Giffords is pretty conservative, but did fight for her district. More than you can say for most Congressmen. A lot of fighting for themselves in there.

I am sure Giffords will be back. She does what she sets her mind to.

Amazing person.

As long as she recovers completely. I don't think we will see her again though, if she doesn't make a full recovery because the Repubs will do all they can to make her seem to be incompetent and not "up to the job." I was hoping her husband might go for her seat but I guess he's going to be involved completely in her recovery program, too. Can't blame him, but he'd probably be a hell of a representative and far smarter than any Repub from AZ, including the present governor.

Repub from AZ. Sends shivers down my spine.

AZ is the latest to attack unions. They are going further than any other state has so far.

I hope AZ has the sense of WI and will start recall petitions going! I hear it is about the same process.

Me, too, dori. I hope APL will be back online to talk to us soon about his reaction to Gabby Gifford's resignation and what it will mean for his state.

Yes, I miss APL. I hope he is getting better by the day.

It will be interesting to see how AZ treats this latest threat.
