Remember that stray cat that showed up on my deck a few weeks ago, sick and suffering from an upper respiratory infection?

He's here to stay, folks...I know, I know...I said I was taking him to the animal shelter, but they won't care for him like I do...even if I can't afford to have another cat, this little fellow has become quite attached. I wish I had before and after photos of him. He's put on weight, he's playing, and he uses the litter box. He's still living downstairs in my basement hobby area, but he seems quite content. He and Saber can't be around each other, but that's not hard to accomplish.

I have to name him...but so far, nothing I've thought of really clicks. A friend calls him Marmalade, but that doesn't suit him. Any suggestions?

Catherine

So nice you are going to keep him. Remember Eva said she would love to have him if you and she didn't live so far apart? She will be happy you are keeping him I am sure.

What to name him? He has such a beautiful face--looks a little like native war paint. Got any native American names you like?

Catherine,
I'm thrilled that you are keeping him!! It's hard not to see why. After caring for him, it's hard to not get attached. I'm happy I didn't see his picture until now or I would have asked for him to be sent to me. He is the exact same coloring as my 2 cats.

Neko = Cat in Japanese

I knew a Japanese family 40 or so years ago who named called their cat Neko. It always cracks me up whenever I think of it.

Mostly here chez Seamus we name our cats with people names. I had a cat named Phread (a character in Doonesbury), Winifred, Sedgewick etc...

I have a red cat named Lucy. Red head... Lucy... as in Lucille Ball.

Seamus, I named one of my cats 'Fred Astaire' because he danced. Would walk down the road and break out in a dance. AND he was black with a white vest and spats. Sure looked like a Fred Astaire to me.

It was a year before my neighbor said, I hate having your cat named after my grandfather. Actually I would have thought it would be a compliment. Her grandfather was an old dumpy man who constantly threw rocks into my yard. Guess he didn't want them anymore.

JayHawk, those names are fantastic. All it takes is to find out if the kitten is peaceful, full of sun, a good mouser, whatever. I like the full of sun one.

And then it could always be named Stripey1.

I was also thinking of Stripey1 as a perfect fit. But that's already taken. :?

Good to see you J.

Do you think Stripey would mind?

I'm afraid I unintentionally misled you wonderful and loving people! I went back and read my original post, and I realized that, as I was typing the post, I forgot to include a caption under the photo, saying that "This isn't my little stray, but it looks exactly like him." So, I'll say it now...That particular photo ISN'T my cat, but it could be considering the resemblance. I apologize profusely. So sorry...but it does look just like him, including the face and the coloring.

Quote:
HELAKU: full of sun
I LIKE this one...I could call him Hell for short!

I also like Neko...I had a wonderful student once whose name was Nico...are they pronounced the same way? Does that have the short e or the long e? My student's name had the long e sound, even though he spelled it with an i.

Thanks for your words of encouragement, and for your name suggestions. I may have to call him Neko Helaku..."Little Cat Full of Sun."

Any of you ever read the charming book "The Cat Who Went to Heaven" by Elizabeth Coatsworth? If you've not, I highly recommend it. It's a great escape from all the political turmoil.

Catherine

Holly and Gypsy look like they're having fun. They also are beautiful.

If I take photos of my little stray, will you tell me how to post them here?

I'm a real dullard when it comes to moving digital photos around, even though I've got several books on the subject. :?

sure, no prob. I'm using Image Shack. You register (it's free), they send you an e-mail and you upload your image(s). The page there gives you multiple URLs to choose from. You select the right one, Ctrl-C it and Ctrl-V it into the forum's message box. Let me know when you have a pic and I'll see you get it posted via Image Shack or any other Image hosting site.
And hey, I didn't know this stuff until a couple of weeks ago and I've been working with computers and the internet for over 20 years. Talk about stepping on the firehose !

Thanks, Jayhawk...as soon as I get the camera out and have the time to spend with it, I'll let you help me. Sounds easy enough.
