Arizona Senate votes to repeal near-total 1864 abortion ban

ov. Ducey signs abortion bill

Arizona lawmakers took a significant step Wednesday toward blocking a Civil War-era abortion ban, after state senators repealed the measure the Arizona Supreme Court said last month could stand.

The vote fell largely on party lines, with two Republican state senators, Sen. Shawnna Bolick and Senate President Pro Tempore T.J. Shope, breaking from the chamber's GOP majority to back repealing the near-total ban.

Along with banning abortions in all situations except life-threatening medical emergencies, the nineteenth century law imposes prison terms for doctors and others who aid in an abortion.

The repeal will head to Gov. Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, for her signature. As the Senate was voting, Hobbs told reporters earlier in the day that she would sign it “as soon as it gets to my desk.”

Biden administration plans to drastically change federal rules on marijuana

Marijuana to be reclassified

The Biden administration is poised to make a landmark change to the federal government's position on marijuana with a proposed plan that would no longer consider marijuana among the most dangerous and addictive substances.

In what would be the biggest change in marijuana policy the federal government has taken since pot was first outlawed, the Drug Enforcement Administration will take public comments on a plan to recategorize marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act, according to a source familiar with the process. The news was first reported by The Associated Press.

The Department of Justice will send its recommendation to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III drug to the White House Office of Management and Budget, according to the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly. The Justice Department is expected to transmit the recommendation today, the source said.

NATO chief, on unannounced Kyiv visit, says arms flows to Ukraine will increase

NATO chief in KyivNATO boss Jens Stoltenberg told Ukrainians on Monday that his alliance’s members had failed to live up to their promises of military aid in recent months, but said the flow of arms and ammunition would now increase.

In an unannounced visit to Ukraine, the secretary general of the transatlantic military alliance held talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and was due to address Ukraine’s parliament, the Rada.
His visit – the third since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 - comes at a difficult time on the battlefield for Ukraine. After a failed Ukrainian counter-offensive last year, Russian forces have gained the initiative – at least in part due to a dearth of arms and ammunition from Kyiv’s Western partners.

Netanyahu vows to raid Rafah ‘with or without’ hostage deal

Neanyahu vows to invade Rafah

Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that Israel will proceed with an offensive on the southern Gaza city of Rafah even if renewed efforts at internationally brokered talks with Hamas result in the release of hostages and a ceasefire.

Mediators led by Egypt have renewed efforts aimed at a truce in recent days after it became clearer that Israel is preparing for its long-threatened ground operation in Rafah. The city on the Egyptian border is the only part of the Palestinian territory that has not faced ground fighting, and more than half of the strip’s 2.3 million population has sought shelter there.

Speaking in Jerusalem on Tuesday, the Israeli prime minister said: “The idea that we will halt the war before achieving all of its goals is out of the question. We will enter Rafah and we will eliminate the Hamas battalions there – with or without a deal, in order to achieve total victory.”

Miami Grand Prix organizers stop plans for Trump fundraiser in luxury suite

Miami Grand PrixOfficials with the Miami Grand Prix recently halted a Donald Trump presidential campaign fundraiser being planned for the upcoming Formula One race, sending a cease-and-desist letter to its organizer.

A Miami Grand Prix representative notified Steven Witkoff, a close friend of Trump, that Witkoff would not be allowed to use a suite at the race to fundraise for the former president, the Washington Post first reported.

Witkoff allegedly plotted to host a political fundraiser at the Paddock Club rooftop suite, charging potential attendees $250,000 a ticket to attend.

The Paddock suite facilities at the F1 race are fairly exclusive, providing guests with better views of the racetrack and other perks, according to the F1 experiences website.

Donald Trump's Hush Money Trial, Week 3:

Donald TrumpFormer President Donald Trump’s historic criminal trial is now in its third week of proceedings.

Trump is facing 34 criminal counts related to his alleged efforts to conceal $130,000 in hush money paid in 2016 to silence allegations of an extramarital affair with adult film actor Stormy Daniels. Daniels is expected to testify in the trial, as is Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney, who previously served jail time for his role in facilitating the payment.

Last week, the jury heard from former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, who testified about conversations he had with Cohen regarding the Daniels payment. He also detailed his publication’s efforts to “catch and kill” unflattering stories about Trump, including allegations by former Playboy model Karen McDougal that she had an affair with Trump from 2006 to 2007.

Judge Merchan found Trump in contempt of court and fined him $9,000 for nine posts that attacked people involved in the trial. He had to delete the content in question and faces jail time should he ignore the order again.
