US to seek death penalty against white supremacist Buffalo shooter

US seeks death penalty for Buffalo shootingU.S. prosecutors will seek the death penalty against the white supremacist who killed 10 Black people at a Buffalo, New York, grocery store in 2022, marking the first time the Biden administration has initiated capital punishment proceedings.

The U.S. Justice Department in a court filing on Friday said it would seek the death penalty for Payton Gendron for killings motivated by his "animus toward Black persons."

Gendron, who was 18 at the time of the mass shooting, has already pleaded guilty to separate state charges of murder and domestic terrorism and was sentenced last February to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Gendron's defense lawyers previously said he would consider pleading guilty to more than two dozen federal charges - including hate crime and firearm offenses - if the death penalty was taken off the table.

US corporations push to roll back Trump-era tax policies they once endorsed

US Corporations want to roll back Trup era tax breaks

US corporations and their supporters in Washington are pushing aggressively to roll back tax policies they once endorsed, in a move that could return hundreds of billions of dollars to some of America’s biggest companies.

As congressional negotiators attempt to keep the government funded past 19 January, an agreement is emerging that ties the corporate tax breaks to an increase in support for vulnerable American families – an effort to make the deal more palatable for Democrats.

Just six years ago the Business Roundtable, a lobbying group for CEOs of large US firms, described the Trump-era Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as “a remarkable, once-in-a-generation opportunity”. Now, the group is leading “a six-figure advocacy campaign” to roll back parts of it, according to Politico, and threatening that failing to secure new tax cuts will lead to “slower job creation, smaller wage increases and lower overall economic growth”.

South Africa tells top UN court Israel is committing genocide in Gaza as landmark case begins

ICJ hears Israel genocide caseIn a case that strikes at the heart of Israel’s national identity, South Africa formally accused the country of committing genocide against Palestinians and pleaded Thursday with the United Nations’ top court to order an immediate halt to Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Israel, which was founded in the aftermath of the Holocaust, has vehemently denied the allegations. As a sign of how seriously they regard the case, Israeli leaders have taken the rare step of engaging with the court to defend their international reputation. Israel often boycotts international tribunals or U.N. investigations, saying they are unfair and biased.

CNN Dumps Donald Trump Presser For A Dose Of The Truth

Kaitlan Collins

“News Central” anchor Kaitlan Collins cut into a live feed of the former president and Republican 2024 front-runner yet again repeating his baseless stolen election claims following a D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals hearing in which his lawyers had argued his “absolute immunity” from prosecution for his acts when in the White House. Legal experts have dismissed the argument.

Collins interrupted the network’s broadcast of the presser after Trump told untruths about “tremendous voter fraud” and “determinative voter fraud” and falsely claimed he was being targeted by President Joe Biden ahead of a possible rematch of the 2020 election in November.

“Of course, a few fact checks and reality statements on what you’re hearing there,” she told viewers.

“There is no evidence of voter fraud. Many courts have found that there has never been any evidence of it that Trump has been able to bring, despite what he is continuing to say there,” she added.

Infowars host Owen Shroyer gets 2 months in prison in Capitol insurrection case

Own Shroyer gets two months sentenceInfowars host Owen Shroyer was sentenced on Tuesday to two months behind bars for joining the mob’s riot at the U.S. Capitol, which prosecutors said he “helped create” by spewing violent rhetoric and spreading baseless claims of election fraud to hundreds of thousands of viewers.

Shroyer hosts a daily show called “The War Room With Owen Shroyer” for the website operated by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Prosecutors said Shroyer used his online platform — and later a megaphone outside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — to amplify lies that Democrats stole the 2020 presidential election from Donald Trump, who was the Republican incumbent.

Shroyer didn’t enter the Capitol, but he led a march to the building and led rioters in chants near the top of the building’s steps. He’s among only a few people charged in the riot who neither went inside the building nor were accused of engaging in violence or destruction.

It's over: 2023 was Earth's hottest year, experts say.

2023 was Earth's hottest year

It's a moment scientists have warned about for months: Earth has just ended its warmest year since people began keeping records, and scientists say it may have been the warmest in 125,000 years.

Even though the December data isn't yet official, the results were already "locked in" by mid-December, Gavin Schmidt, a scientist at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, told USA TODAY.

Given the six consecutive months of extremely warm temperatures, it was virtually impossible for December to be cold enough to alter the final results.

"We are already beyond the point that any normal process would be able to keep 2023 from being the hottest year," Robert Rohde of Berkeley Earth, said in mid-December.

Florida Resort Abruptly Cancels Marjorie Taylor Green’s Jan. 6 Event

MTG event cancelled in Florida

A Florida resort scheduled to host Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) for what organizers claimed would be a small book signing abruptly canceled it Thursday after learning the gathering was actually meant to commemorate the third anniversary of the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Westgate Resorts’ Kissimmee, Florida, location said the Osceola Republican Party made no mention of Jan. 6 when they pitched the event, instead describing it as a book signing for Greene’s memoir.

“Please be advised that Westgate was not made aware of the purpose of this event when we were approached to host a book signing,” the resort said in a statement. “This event has been cancelled and is no longer taking place at our resort.”

Despite the cancellation, the Osceola County Republican Party was still selling tickets to the event as of Friday morning.

FBI memo suggests swatting incidents targeting Jewish institutions are linked

Swatting at Jewish groups connectedA spree of swatting incidents at nearly 200 Jewish synagogues and schools last week is believed to be a connected effort by foreign actors, according to a confidential FBI memo.

“Swatting,” named for the elite police groups specializing in high-risk operations, is when an individual or group of people make a misleading or false report to emergency services in an attempt to draw numerous armed authorities to a specific place.

The memo, obtained by ABC News and reportedly sent to partner law enforcement agencies, said more than 30 of the FBI’s 56 field offices are working to investigate the string of false reports.
