Gordon S Wood, a Pulitzer prize-winning author and historian, was killed on Sunday when he was struck by a car in a supermarket parking lot in Rhode Island.

Wood, 92, won the Pulitzer in 1993 in the history category for The Radicalism of the American Revolution, a landmark tome that advanced the theory of the break with Britain being at least as much of an internal social and political transformation as a desire to be rid of colonial masters.

According to East Providence police, as reported by the news outlet golocalprov.com, Wood was hit by a car as he crossed the supermarket’s parking lot. The driver remained at the scene and was cooperative, police said.

Police said Wood was brought to Rhode Island hospital with “serious injuries”, from which he later died.

A shooting near a community festival in Toledo, Ohio, wounded at least 12 people on Saturday, with police saying a search for the suspects was ongoing.

Two of the wounded were in a critical condition, Toledo deputy police chief Joe Heffernan said. He said it appeared there were at least two people firing weapons who were “probably shooting at each other”.

The Toledo police department said the shooting happened near the Old West End festival, an annual gathering of live music and home tours in a historic district of the city.

The department said an active search was under way for those responsible.

A federal judge on Friday, June 5, blocked the Trump administration from enforcing new conditions on billions of dollars in federal nutrition funding, siding with a coalition of Democratic-led states that argued the requirements threatened programs serving low-income families.

U.S. District Judge Myong Joun granted a preliminary injunction sought by 20 states and the District of Columbia, temporarily halting the U.S. Department of Agriculture's effort to tie funding to compliance with a range of federal policy priorities, according to reports from AP News, Newsweek and Reuters.

The challenged requirements applied to USDA grants and programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which helps roughly 39 million Americans buy groceries. States argued the new conditions jeopardized funding already approved by Congress and could disrupt critical food assistance programs while the lawsuit moves forward.

Joun, who sits on the federal bench in Boston, said he would issue a written memorandum explaining his decision at a later date.

The New York State Senate and Assembly have passed three high-profile bills, including regulations on data centers, surveillance pricing, and civil orders of protection in stalking cases.

The Responsible Data Center Development Act will impose a year-long pause on new permits for data center computing facilities requiring 20 megawatts or more, and the One Fair Price Act will prevent retailers from using consumers' personal data to generate custom prices.

The Ceasing Repeated and Extremely Egregious Predatory Behavior Act will create a new class of civil orders of protection in stalking cases. However, more controversial environmental, housing, and entertainment measures were abandoned.

A Los Angeles county jury has found the socialite Rebecca Grossman and former MLB player Scott Erickson negligent in the deaths of two young brothers whom Grossman struck as she drove in Westlake Village in September 2020.\

Following an eight-week civil trial, the jury on Wednesday awarded $176m to the family of 11-year-old Mark Iskander and his eight-year-old brother, Jacob. The boys were crossing the street with a skateboard and inline skates when Grossman fatally hit them with her car.

Grossman, 62, and Erickson, 58, were negligent and “acted in concert with each other in the course of their activities leading to the fatal collision”, according to the jurors.

Grossman is serving a sentence of 15 years to life after being convicted of second-degree murder in a separate criminal case in 2024. The civil jury also determined that both defendants acted with malice, allowing for a second phase of the trial to consider punitive damages.

Among the delegation was Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, alongside Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu and 13 members of the Knesset.

Smotrich has called for Gaza to be emptied of its Palestinian population and for the destruction of the besieged enclave.

Middle East Eye reported in May that the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court had filed a secret arrest warrant application for Smotrich over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

MEE understands that the charges against Smotrich include forced displacement as a crime against humanity and war crime, the transfer of Israel’s own population as a war crime, and persecution and apartheid as crimes against humanity.

Addressing attendees, Smotrich said the parade "reminds me of the Jerusalem Flag March", an ultra-nationalist procession through Jerusalem's Old City and Muslim Quarter on Jerusalem Day where participants have often chanted "Death to Arabs" and while attacking Palestinian and Christian residents.

Eliyahu, another member of the delegation, has previously called for nuclear weapons to be used against Gaza's pre-genocide population of 2.1 million Palestinians.

He has also advocated starving Palestinians in the besieged enclave, declaring that "there is no problem bombing their food and fuel reserves. They should starve."

The Israel Day Parade has long been a fixture of New York's political calendar and is often viewed as a test of political loyalty to Israel among elected officials.
