Barrel bombs hit largest hospital in Syria's Aleppo

Aleppo hospital barrel bombedAt least two barrel bombs have hit the largest hospital in the rebel-held eastern side of Syria's Aleppo city, according to the medical organisation that supports it.

The facility, known as M10, had already been hit by heavy bombardment on Wednesday along with the second-largest hospital in the area in what Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, denounced as "war crimes".

Unable To Name A Foreign Leader, Gary Johnson Has Another 'Aleppo Moment'

Gary JohnsonAsked to name his favorite foreign leader, or any foreign leader he admires, Libertarian nominee for president Gary Johnson was unable to come up with an answer.

The exchange occurred on an MSNBC town hall hosted by Chris Matthews Wednesday night.

When Johnson hesitated at the initial question, Matthews said, "Go ahead, you gotta do this. Anywhere. Any continent. Canada, Mexico, Europe, over there, Asia, South America, Africa. Name a foreign leader that you respect."

Edward Snowden designs iPhone case to stop government surveillance

snowden's phone caseNational Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden continued his crusade against government surveillance on Thursday, revealing the design for an iPhone case that would safeguard the user’s location.

The device would alert the phone owner when its radio signals, which can broadcast location, were turned on. Snowden said that even when such features are supposedly disabled while turned to “airplane mode,” the government can use radio signals to track the phone.

Amid police shootings, Army "serious" about tackling anger among combat vets

Police say rage may have driven Gavin Long, 29, who served five years in the Marine Corps, to kill three police Sunday in Baton Rouge and Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, a former Army reservist, to fatally shoot five officers in Dallas in early July.

Duterte kills 100 suspected drug dealerssPresident Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs is spiraling out of control, a top human rights lawyer and opposition lawmakers said on Friday as police confirmed killing more than 100 drug suspects and at least two senators expressed support for a proposed Senate investigation of the killings.

“President Duterte’s war on crime has spawned a nuclear explosion of violence that is spiraling out of control and creating a nation without judges, without law and without reason,” said Manuel Diokno, chair of the Free Legal Assistance Group.

Southern California wildfire grows to 1,700 acres, evacuations under way

California Sherpa wildfireResidents and visitors near Las Padres National Forest were evacuated Thursday as a wildfire continues to ravage thousands of acres near Santa Barbara.

The so-called Sherpa Fire has consumed 1,700 acres in the areas of Refugio Canyon, Las Flores, Venadito, El Capitan Campground, El Capitan State Park, Ocean Mesa at El Capitan State Park and Refugio Campground. Evacuation centers have been set up in two locations, including one that will take horses and other large animals.

A 15-mile stretch of Highway 101 in Santa Barbara County was shut down for several hours into early Thursday morning.

Trump campaign admits it did not raise $6 million for veterans

Trump veteran's eventWhen Donald Trump skipped a GOP debate in January to host a fundraiser for veterans, he touted its success by citing the $6 million raised for veterans groups. One problem -- that figure is inaccurate.

Following the rally in Des Moines, Iowa, the Trump campaign said the event raised $5 million and Trump personally contributed an additional $1 million. But campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told CNN Friday the amount raised was actually less than $6 million.
