Tennessee's House of Representatives has voted to strip $250,000 from the city of Memphis as punishment for local lawmakers' removal of Confederate statues.

The measure was part of a last-minute amendment added to an appropriations bill that included money to be used for a bicentennial celebration next year, the Associated Press reported.

The amendment stirred heated debate on the House floor, where Democratic Rep. Antonio Parkinson was booed after calling it racist.
