The Supreme Court of Virginia on Friday upheld a temporary ban on firearms at the state Capitol ahead of a pro-gun rally on Monday that authorities believed could lead to extremist violence.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam issued the weapons ban, which runs from 5 p.m. Friday until 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to a release from the governor's office. Northam declared a state of emergency and banned all weapons, including firearms, in the area around the state Capitol in Richmond after he says law enforcement received multiple credible threats of violence by militias and extremists groups planning to attend.
