City of Louisville agrees to 'substantial' settlement in Breonna Taylor shooting

Breonna Taylor family makes settlementLouisville's metro government is expected to announce a "substantial" financial settlement Tuesday with the family of Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old Black woman fatally shot by police in her apartment six months ago, The Courier Journal has learned.

The settlement is expected to be announced at a 2 p.m. press conference at Mayor Greg Fischer's office, with Taylor's family and attorneys Ben Crump, Sam Aguiar and Lonita Baker.

The settlement amount has not been disclosed, but it is expected to dwarf the biggest payout previously made by police, according to a person knowledgeable about the details who said he could not be identified.

The largest amount the city has paid to date to settle allegations of police misconduct was $8.5 million to Edwin Chandler in 2012, who was wrongfully imprisoned for more than nine years after Detective Mark Handy perjured himself.
