Heather Nauert

President Donald Trump has tapped State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Trump chose the former Fox News anchor to replace Nikki Haley, who is leaving her post at the end of the month. The president confirmed the nomination to reporters and on Twitter Friday, after numerous media outlets reported his choice late Thursday.

Nauert accepted the position under the condition that it would be downgraded from its current Cabinet rank, a senior White House official confirmed on Friday, meaning Nauert will report to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
