Labor Sec. Alex Acosta resigns

Embattled Labor Secretary Alex Acosta has resigned amid charges that he negotiated a lenient sentence for an accused serial child sexual predator, saying it was not "right or fair" to continue in his job with so much attention on the heavily denounced 2008 plea agreement Acosta made when he was a federal prosecutor.

Acosta stood next to President Donald Trump – who as recently as Tuesday defended his Cabinet secretary and said he felt sorry for him – on the South Lawn of the White House as the president was departing for Wisconsin and Ohio for fundraisers and a speech on trade. Trump said Acosta, who was under pressure from Democratic lawmakers and others to resign, had made the decision himself.

Acosta was a U.S. attorney in Florida in 2007 when wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein, who has socialized with both Trump and former President Bill Clinton, was fighting charges that he lured underage girls to his homes and had them perform sex acts. Acosta made a secret plea agreement with Epstein at the time – failing to notify the alleged victims of the terms, as is customary – and Epstein ended up with a 13-month sentence that allowed him to leave jail to go to work six days a week. The deal also protected Epstein from federal prosecution and stopped an FBI investigation that might have unearthed more victims.

TVNL Comment: Acosta should be in jail along with Epstein.  He clearly broke the law by not consulting the victims of this horror.
