Neo-Nazis, anti-fascist groups descend on Georgia town for competing rallies

City officials of Newnan, Ga., erected barriers around Greenville Street Park and blocked off several key streets nearby to help contain and control rallies and counter-demonstrations Saturday by neo-Nazi, white supremacists groups and members of an anti-fascist coalition.

It could be the largest face-off between the groups since clashes at Charlottesville last year that left one person dead.

N Korea halts nuclear and missile tests

North Korea has said it will end its tests of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles, and shut down its nuclear test site, in a dramatic development ahead of a much-anticipated meeting between its leader, Kim Jong-un, and Donald Trump.

The suspensions went into immediate effect on Saturday, according to state-run KCNA news agency.

The US president greeted the news in a tweet. “This is very good news for North Korea and the World – big progress!” Trump wrote.

The news comes less than a week before Kim meets the South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, for a summit in the demilitarized zone that divides the peninsula.

Throw out romaine lettuce, CDC advises as E. coli outbreak spreads

Throw out romaine lettuceAll store-bought romaine lettuce should be discarded because of a nationwide E. coli outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised.

Sixteen states have reported E. coli infections thus far. The source of the infection has not been identified, but the CDC said Wednesday that restaurants and retailers should stop serving salads and salad mixes with lettuce "from the Yuma, Ariz., growing region."

Pittsburgh police gear up in case Trump fires MuellerLeaders at the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police instructed detectives to carry riot gear should protests break out if President Trump fires special counsel Robert Mueller.

The directions came Wednesday, reports CBS Pittsburgh, in a memo from Pittsburgh Police Commander Victor Joseph.

"There is a belief that President Trump will soon move to fire Special Prosecutor Mueller," he wrote to agency detectives, saying the department received information on at least one possible demonstration. "This would result in a large protest within 24 hours of the firing."

Congress' most powerful lawmaker said he would not stand for another term in his Wisconsin district this November. Republicans already face a tough challenge from Democrats to keep control of the lower chamber.

Mr Ryan joins nearly 30 House Republicans who have announced this year they are retiring outright. Democrats need 23 seats to take over the House.

Brig. Gen Kurt Stein suspendedThe Marine Corps on Tuesday suspended a general who publicly ridiculed as “fake news” allegations of sexual harassment at his command and also joked about a chaplain recently fired for having sex in public, USA TODAY has learned.

Brig. Gen. Kurt Stein, director of Marine and Family Programs, made the remarks April 6 before an audience estimated at hundreds of civilian employees and Marines at their base in Quantico, Va., according to three people who attended the all-hands meeting last week. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they said they feared retaliation.

Algeria state TV: 257 killed in Boufarik military plane crash

Algerian military plane down; 257 dead

At least 257 people have been killed after a military plane crashed near the Boufarik airbase outside the Algerian capital, Algiers, according to Algerian state television.

The plane, an Ilyushin Il-76, mostly carried soldiers when it went down shortly after takeoff on Wednesday morning, state TV reported.

Algeria's defence ministry was quoted as saying that 247 passengers and 10 crew members were among the dead following the crash.

China's Xi renews vow to open economy, cut tariffs as U.S. trade row deepens

China's Xi vows to open eonomy, cut tariffsChinese President Xi Jinping promised on Tuesday to open the country’s economy further and lower import tariffs on products like cars, in a speech seen as an attempt to defuse an escalating trade dispute with the United States.

While much of his pledges were reiterations of previously announced reforms that foreign businesses say are long overdue, Xi’s comments sent stock markets and the U.S. dollar higher on hopes of a compromise that could avert a trade war.

Xi said China will widen market access for foreign investors, addressing a chief complaint of its trading partners and a point of contention for U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which has threatened billions of dollars in tariffs on Chinese goods.
