rapper attacked by police for withdrawing his own moneyA rapper exiting an Atlanta bank, found himself in handcuffs and on the ground with guns pointed at his head after police stopped him for making a substantial withdrawal from his account, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting.

According to Sam Benson — who goes by the stage name of “Blac Youngsta” — he had just exited a Wells Fargo branch in the upscale community of Buckhead after withdrawing $200,000 in order to buy a new car.

Maryland officer jailed for putting gun to man's head: report

Maryland officer jailedA Maryland police officer has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for putting his gun to a man's head and mouth during a 2014 incident that was caught on cellphone video, a television station reported.

Prince George's County Police Officer Jenchesky Santiago was sentenced on Friday following his conviction in December of misconduct in office, first- and second-degree assault and use of a handgun during a crime of violence, the NBC affiliate in Washington D.C. reported.

Mexico Captures Cartel Boss, El Chapo

El Chapo capturedMexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced Friday that notorious cartel boss Joaquín Guzmán Loera—best known as "El Chapo"—has been captured. Loera had been on the run since July 2015, when he escaped from a state prison. "Mission accomplished," Nieto tweeted.

El Chapo is the head of Mexico’s largest drug-trafficking gang, the Sinaloa cartel. His previous arrest occurred February 22, 2014, when an elite Mexican Marine squad nabbed him at a condominium complex in Mazatlán. He was brought to Altiplano, Mexico's most fortified prison. The drug lord's stay was relatively brief, however, as he escaped Hollywood-style 15 months later.

Lawyers Went to Rahm Emanuel, Then Quashed the Laquan McDonald Video

Video squashed by Chi officialsCity of Chicago lawyers, after meeting with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, demanded the Laquan McDonald family bury the video showing the killing of their son by a police officer.

Emanuel said last month that Stephen Patton, Chicago’s corporation counsel, briefed him “towards the end of March” about what the dashboard-camera video showed and about the proposed $5 million settlement with McDonald’s estate. After that briefing, Patton’s second-in-command, Thomas Platt, drafted settlement language to keep the dash-cam video hidden for at least several years, according to emails reviewed by The Daily Beast (PDF).

Macy's announces closure of 36 stores, layoffs after slow holiday sales

Macy'sRetailer Macy's Inc. announced the elimination of more than 4,500 jobs and the closure of 36 stores after disappointing sales during the holiday season.

It said Wednesday it would initiate "a series of cost-efficiency and process-improvement measures" by reducing the workforce at each of about 770 Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores, closing other stores, and offering a "voluntary separation opportunity" to some senior executives. The downsizing actions are set to begin early this year.

U.S. soldier killed, two wounded in Afghanistan

Afghanistan battle kills one US soldierOne U.S. soldier was killed during a joint U.S.-Afghan Special Operations mission in Afghanistan, two U.S. defense officials told CNN on Tuesday.

Defense officials said a medical helicopter was hit by mortar fire while on the ground but was able to take off. The incident occurred in Marjah in Helmand Province.

Periodic table's seventh row is finally complete

Periodic TableChemists around the world have celebrated the New Year with the addition of four newly discovered chemical elements to the periodic table.

The new elements, which were verified by international bodies on 30 December and have been given temporary names, are the missing jigsaw pieces needed to complete the seventh row of the iconic table.

Teams of scientists from Japan, Russia and the US that uncovered the missing elements have now been invited to give permanent names to their new discoveries.

China suspends markets after stocks tank

China market closed after dropChina's major stock exchanges tanked on the first trading day of the year, triggering a "circuit-breaker" that suspended equities trade nationwide for the first time and put months of regulatory work to restore market stability at risk.

The selloff saw the CSI300 index of the largest listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen lose 7.0 percent before trading was suspended, its worst single-day performance since late August 2015, after a summer stock market rout.

Israel indicts Jewish extremists in deadly arson

Israel aresonists arrestedIsrael on Sunday indicted four Jewish extremists suspected in a July arson attack on a Palestinian home that killed a toddler and his parents — a case that has been unsolved for months and helped fuel the current wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence.

The long-awaited indictment follows months of investigations into a web of Jewish extremists operating in the West Bank. The indictment named Amiram Ben-Uliel, 21, as the main suspect in the attack. A minor was charged as an accessory. Yinon Reuveni, 20, and another minor were charged for other violence against Palestinians.
