Biden administration pauses ammunition shipment to Israel: Report

Israeli ammunition

The Biden administration halted a shipment of ammunition bound for Israel last week, Axios first reported, as pressure rises over the Israeli military’s promised invasion of Rafah in Gaza.

Israeli officials were left scrambling as to why the shipment was withheld, Axios reported, while  CNN reported that the decision was unrelated to U.S. opposition to an invasion of Rafah.

The Biden administration has committed to strongly backing Israel in its war against Hamas, signing $26 billion in military and humanitarian aid for the war last week, but officials have repeatedly warned against moving into Rafah, where over a million displaced Palestinians are sheltering from the war.

The National Security Council said in a statement to The Hill that the Biden administration’s backing of Israel has not changed.

Kim Godwin out at ABC News

Kim Godwin out at ABC News

Kim Godwin is leaving as the head of ABC News, she announced to employees on Sunday evening.

Godwin is retiring after what she called a time of “considerable reflection,” she wrote in a note obtained by The Hill.

In another note to staff, Debra O’Connell, a longtime executive at Disney, which owns ABC News, said she would be taking over for Godwin.

“Anyone who’s passionate about what we do knows there’s no other business like it, so this was not an easy or quick decision,” Godwin wrote in her note. “I’m certain it’s the right one for me as I look to the future and prioritize what’s most important for me and my family.”

Godwin’s ouster comes amid a slew of headlines surrounding her leadership style and management in recent days.

Police dismantle Palestinian solidarity encampment at USC

USC police dismantle protesters

Police have dismantled the student-led Palestinian solidarity encampment at the University of Southern California.

About 4am on Saturday, as many as 100 Los Angeles police officers in riot gear raided the encampment at dawn as anti-war student demonstrators slept in the tents. In a series of tweets during the raid, the university warned demonstrators to leave the area, adding that “people who don’t leave could be arrested”.

Speaking to KTLA, members of the student-run newspapers the Daily Trojan and Annenberg Media said: “We were just sitting here, camping out. We saw a peaceful encampment. They’ve been eating food, having teach-ins … and then they eventually went in their tents later in the night and then at around 4[am] actually, we saw dozens of DPS cars [department of public safety] come in and then from there, they started bringing in the officers.”

At least 400 rescued from flooding in Texas as waters continue rising

400 rescued in Texas floods

High waters flooded neighborhoods around Houston on Saturday following heavy rains that resulted in crews rescuing more than 400 people from homes, rooftops and roads engulfed in murky water. Others prepared to evacuate their properties.

A flood watch remained in effect through Sunday afternoon after forecasters predicted additional rainfall Saturday night and the likelihood of major flooding in Harris county, the nation’s third-largest county which includes Houston, and nearby areas.

Houston authorities have not reported any deaths or injuries. Judge Lina Hidalgo, Harris county’s top elected official, said on Saturday that 178 people and 122 pets had been rescued so far in the county.

Israel throws out Al Jazeera, says global media outlet backs Hamas

Al Jazeera thrown out of Israel - the great 'DEMOCRACY'

Arab media giant Al Jazeera said Sunday it would "pursue every legal step" to continue operations in Israel, hours after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet voted to shut down the Qatari-based global outlet until the war in Gaza ends.

Netanyahu, who has long accused Al Jazeera of bias toward Hamas, said the cabinet determined the outlet was a threat to national security.

"Al Jazeera correspondents have harmed the security of Israel and incited against (Israeli) soldiers," Netanyahu said. "The time has come to eject Hamas's mouthpiece from our country."

Al Jazeera rejected those claims as a "dangerous and ridiculous lie" that puts its journalists at risk. The network is funded by the Qatari government, which has been a key mediator in cease-fire talks. Like many media outlets around the world, however, Al Jazeera has been critical of Israel's military operation in Gaza.

Driver found dead after crashing into White House complex gate, Secret Service says

WH crashA driver was found dead after crashing into an outer perimeter gate of the White House complex Saturday night, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

The incident, which occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m., posed no threat to the White House, and the public doesn't face any ongoing safety concerns, Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi shared on X, formerly Twitter.

Officials said in a statement early Sunday that “security protocols were implemented as officers cleared the vehicle and attempted to render aid to the driver who was discovered deceased.”

Washington's Metropolitan Police Department identified the driver as an adult male and shared in a post on X that the vehicle crashed into a security barrier around the complex. Law enforcement officials added that the incident is currently being investigated “only as a traffic crash.”

Hundreds of Russian Troops Gathered Out In The Open. They Didn’t Know The Ukrainians Had Aimed Four ATACMS Rockets At Them.

Russian troops killedKuban, a settlement in Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine, is 60 miles from the front line of Russia’s 27-month wider war on Ukraine. Normally well beyond the range of most of Ukraine’s anti-personnel weapons, it had been fairly safe for its Russian occupiers.

This helps to explain why, on or just before Wednesday, potentially hundreds of Russian troops gathered out in the open in a field near Kuban—apparently for training.

She survived the 1970 Kent State shooting. Here's her message to student activists

Kent State shooting survivor

When Roseann "Chic" Canfora arrived at Ohio's Kent State University in 1968, she says she was constantly being given leaflets by anti-war activists on campus — and throwing them away.

U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War was dragging on and deeply unpopular with a growing number of Americans. Over time, Canfora became one of them.

"It wasn't until I was personally touched, losing friends in that war and seeing the draft that would now take my brothers to that war, that I stopped throwing the anti-war leaflets away and I paid attention," she recalls in an interview with NPR.
