With "Angry Waters" Rising, Officials Warn Of Risk To Life From Florence

Tropical Depression Florence is continuing to bring relentless, torrential rain to much of the South. Florence has already set a record for rainfall in the state of North Carolina, and thousands have evacuated to shelters in North and South Carolina to ride out the storm.

Florence was downgraded to a tropical depression on Sunday morning, but officials warn the worst of the storm is not yet over, with river levels rising, along with the risk of flash floods. The storm's death toll has reached at least 14, and officials expect that number to grow.

"Flood waters are still raging across parts of our state, and the risk to life is rising with the angry waters," said North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper on Sunday. "The storm has never been more dangerous than it is now."

Prosecutor: Border agent charged in 2-week killing spree

Boder patro supervisor accused of serial killingsTexas authorities have charged a U.S. Border Patrol supervisor with murdering four female sex workers during a two-week killing spree that ended when a fifth woman escaped from him and found help.

Juan David Ortiz was arrested Saturday after he was found hiding in a truck in a hotel parking lot in Laredo.

Webb County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz says he was charged with four counts of murder as well as aggravated assault and unlawful restraint.

Threat becomes reality as Florence hitsThe big slosh has begun, and the consequences could be disastrous.

Hurricane Florence's leading edge battered the Carolina coast Thursday, bending trees and shooting frothy sea water over streets on the Outer Banks, as the hulking storm closed in with 90 mph (135 kph) winds for a drenching siege that could last all weekend. Tens of thousands were without power.

Winds and rain were arriving later in South Carolina, and a few people were still walking on the sand at Myrtle Beach while North Carolina was getting pounded. Heavy rainfall began after dark.

Police: Multiple fires, suspected gas explosions in Lawrence, Andover

Fires and explosions in Andover area

Emergency officials are urging people to get out of their houses and evacuate their neighborhoods in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover as firefighters battle dozens of gas explosions that leveled some houses and set fire to others over a large area.

"If you smell gas, you gotta get out of your home," Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera told reporters.

State police said any residents of the area with Columbia Gas service to their house should "evacuate immediately." State police are reporing 70 fires and gas explosions.

Police announced at 7 p.m that electricity in each of the three communities was being shut off to aid.

Scores of friends, family, fans, celebrities and dignitaries are paying their final respects today to Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, who died of pancreatic cancer on Aug. 16.

The service at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, has had performances by Ariana Grande, singing "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and Faith Hill singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" among others. The Clark Sisters, the legendary Detroit-based gospel group performed their song, "Is My Living In Vain?"

Paul Taylor, dancer & choreographer dies at 88

Paul Taylor, the prolific modern dance choreographer whose company was founded in 1954, died August 29 at the age of 88. His best-known works included Esplanade (1975), Aureole (1962), and Orbs (1966).

His death, due to renal failure, was confirmed by Paul Taylor Dance Company spokesperson Lisa Labrado.

A student of the Juilliard School, Mr. Taylor created roles for such choreographers as Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, and George Balanchine, while Pina Bausch and Twyla Tharp were members of his own company before branching out on their own.

2m customers affected by T-Mobile breach T-Mobile announced Friday that a data breach exposed the personal details of about 2 million customers.

The wireless carrier said its cybersecurity team discovered the unauthorized access Monday and reported it to authorities. Customer names, billing zip codes, email addresses, account numbers and account types were exposed in the breach.

"None of your financial data (including credit card information) or social security numbers were involved, and no passwords were compromised," T-Mobile said.

The company told Vice, though, that encrypted passwords were compromised. A spokesperson told the news outlet that the breach affected "slightly less than" 3 percent of its 77 million customers -- about 2 million.
