The Tea Party movement: deluded and inspired by billionaires

Tea Party MovementThe Tea Party movement is remarkable in two respects. It is one of the biggest exercises in false consciousness the world has seen – and the biggest Astroturf operation in history. These accomplishments are closely related.

An Astroturf campaign is a fake grassroots movement: it purports to be a spontaneous uprising of concerned citizens, but in reality it is founded and funded by elite interests. Some Astroturf campaigns have no grassroots component at all. Others catalyse and direct real mobilisations. The Tea Party belongs in the second category.

NC Touch-Screen Machine Flips Straight-Party Vote Four Times in a Row from GOP to Dem

And the touch-screen voting machines continue to flip votes during the early voting period. Right on schedule. Just as always. But, for the second time this week we have the unusual occurrence of votes reportedly flipping away from the GOP.

Yesterday our report was of a touch-screen in Dallas, TX, caught on video flipping an attempted vote for Republican Gov. Rick Perry to straight-ticket Green Party selections in Dallas, TX.

An overview of people caught up in Abramoff probe

Jack AbramoffThe lawmakers, lobbyists, Bush administration officials, congressional staffers and businessmen caught up in the Jack Abramoff public corruption probe: Abramoff was sentenced in September 2008 to four years in prison on charges of mail fraud, conspiracy and tax evasion. Since pleading guilty in 2006, the once-powerful lobbyist has cooperated with the federal investigation of influence-peddling in Washington.

He was sentenced to a six-year prison sentence in a criminal case out of Florida, where he pleaded guilty in January 2006 to charges of conspiracy, honest services fraud and tax evasion in the purchase of gambling cruise boats. He was released to a halfway house in June 2010 and then home confinement and has been working at a pizzeria.

Top Companies Aid Chamber of Commerce in Policy Fights

Top companies aid Chamber of CommercePrudential Financial sent in a $2 million donation last year as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce kicked off a national advertising campaign to weaken the historic rewrite of the nation’s financial regulations.

Dow Chemical delivered $1.7 million to the chamber last year as the group took a leading role in aggressively fighting proposed rules that would impose tighter security requirements on chemical facilities.

NAACP backs report that ties racist groups to tea party

Sal Russo, Tea Party founderA new report, backed by the NAACP, has found what it says are efforts by white nationalist groups and militias to link themselves to the tea party movement, even as some tea party leaders have expelled members who have expressed racist sentiment.

The report , called Tea Party Nationalism, uses news articles, visits to white nationalist Web sites and observance of tea party functions to claim that tea party events have become a forum for extremists "hoping to push these (white) protesters toward a more self-conscious and ideological white supremacy."

Virginia Thomas leaves voice mail for Anita HillA few days ago, Brandeis University professor Anita Hill received  a message on her voice mail at work.

“Good morning, Anita Hill, it's Ginny Thomas,” said the voice, “I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. So give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. Okay have a good day.”

Boss Distributed Premarked GOP Ballots on Day Republican Senator Toured Plant, Employees Say

Jeff SessionsFive black employees of an Alabama-based trucking firm say they were given pre-marked Republican ballots on the day a sitting Republican senator came to visit their facility, and that "an employee drew cross hairs or a target on a picture of President Obama and posted it in the workplace.

The five employees made the allegations in a recently-filed discrimination lawsuit against Altec industries. The company makes specialized trucks, including aerials, digger derricks and telescopic cranes. The little-noticed story was noted by Tracy Walsh on Monday at Courthouse News.
