China's Xi renews vow to open economy, cut tariffs as U.S. trade row deepens

China's Xi vows to open eonomy, cut tariffsChinese President Xi Jinping promised on Tuesday to open the country’s economy further and lower import tariffs on products like cars, in a speech seen as an attempt to defuse an escalating trade dispute with the United States.

While much of his pledges were reiterations of previously announced reforms that foreign businesses say are long overdue, Xi’s comments sent stock markets and the U.S. dollar higher on hopes of a compromise that could avert a trade war.

Xi said China will widen market access for foreign investors, addressing a chief complaint of its trading partners and a point of contention for U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which has threatened billions of dollars in tariffs on Chinese goods.

Zuckerberg testifies before Congress- Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg started testifying before Congress on Tuesday as he looks to fend off the possibility of new regulations as a result of the privacy scandal engulfing his social network.

The 33-year-old internet mogul faces tough questioning from a joint hearing of the U.S. Senate’s Commerce and Judiciary committees.

John Thune, chairman of the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation committee, struck an adversarial tone in his opening remarks here.

“In the past, many of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle have been willing to defer to tech companies’ efforts to regulate themselves. But this may be changing,” he said.

Teachers union threatens to cut ties with Wells Fargo over NRA support

AFT threatens to cut ties with Wells Fargo

A major national teachers union is threatening to cut ties with Wells Fargo over the bank’s deals with the National Rifle Association (NRA).

In a press release Saturday, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) said that it would ditch a Wells Fargo mortgage program unless the company drops its connection to the NRA.

AFT President Randi Weingarten has been in talks with Wells Fargo CEO Tim Sloan about the partnerships, according to the release.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he's left Facebook over data collection

Steve Wozniak leaving FacebookApple co-founder Steve Wozniak told USA TODAY he's leaving Facebook out of growing concern for the carelessness with which Facebook and other Internet companies treat the private information of users.

"Users provide every detail of their life to Facebook and ... Facebook makes a lot of advertising money off this," he said in an email to USA TODAY. "The profits are all based on the user’s info, but the users get none of the profits back."

Canada police say 14 dead after hockey bus crash

14 hockey team members and coach die in bus crashCanadian police said early Saturday 14 people were killed and 14 people were injured after a truck collided with a bus carrying a junior hockey team to a playoff game in Western Canada.

Police say there were 28 people, including the driver, on board the bus of the Humboldt Broncos team when the crash occurred around 5 p.m. Friday on Highway 35 in Saskatchewan.

"We can now confirm fourteen people have died as a result of this collision," The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a release early Saturday.

London crime wave: Shock as six teenagers stabbed in 90 minutes

London stabbingsShocked residents of the British capital called for an end to a surge in violence that now includes six teenagers stabbed in the space of 90 minutes.

The incidents came days after London's murder rate surpassed New York City's for the first time. At least 55 people have been killed in London in 2018, over 30 of them in stabbings.

Police in the Tower Hamlets borough of east London said Thursday that two 15-year-old boys were taken to the hospital with serious injuries after they were stabbed at about 6 p.m. local time Thursday. A 16-year-old who was treated for minor knife injuries was arrested for conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm, and another male was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.

CDC finds 'nightmare' bacteria

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2017 found more than 200 cases of “nightmare bacteria” that can resist most antibiotics, according to a new report released Tuesday.

The CDC has long warned about antibiotic-resistant bacteria, but the report shows that unusual resistance germs, which are resistant to all or most antibiotics tested and are uncommon or carry special resistance genes, are constantly developing and spreading.

New Trump White House aide has Cambridge Analytica ties

A newly appointed Trump national security council aide and longtime behavioral change analyst worked until recently for the parent of Cambridge Analytica, the controversial political data company whose role in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is drawing scrutiny for its alleged improper use of private Facebook data.

Kirsten Fontenrose joined the Trump White House in March as the NSC senior director for Gulf Affairs. There is no indication that Fontenrose, who also has worked for the State Department and U.S. military, was involved in Cambridge’s election effort or any other activities that have come under scrutiny by investigators.

President Donald Trump on Monday morning defended Sinclair Broadcasting after the company came under fire for requiring local news anchors to read promotional material alleging bias from other media organizations.

“So funny to watch Fake News Networks, among the most dishonest groups of people I have ever dealt with, criticize Sinclair Broadcasting for being biased. Sinclair is far superior to CNN and even more Fake NBC, which is a total joke,“ the president tweeted Monday morning.
