Ruth Buzzi, legendary 'Laugh-In' comic and 'Sesame Street' regular, dies at 88

Ruth Buzzi dies at 88
Ruth Buzzi, a variety-show veteran most famous for her role on "Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In", has died. She was 88.

Buzzi died May 1 at her Texas home, her agent Michael Eisenstadt confirmed to USA TODAY in a May 2 statement.

"Her husband of almost 48 years, Kent Perkins expressed to me that she was making people laugh just a few days ago," Eisenstadt wrote. "I was Ruth's agent for over 30 years. She was warm, loving and funny. A great person who was considered a family member."

A female comic from an era when they were scarce, Buzzi "passed away peacefully," according to Eisenstadt, due to complications from Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative condition from which she suffered for 10 years.

Man accused of being MS-13 leader opposes DOJ dropping charges

Vitorrio SantosAttorneys for a Virginia man labeled by the Trump administration as a top MS-13 gang leader are pressing a judge to hold off on dismissing his criminal case, arguing he could be deported without ever hearing — or defending himself against — the specific allegations against him.

Henrry Villatoro Santos’ arrest was announced last month in a nationally televised news conference featuring the attorney general, who accused Villatoro Santos of being the “East Coast leader” of the infamous MS-13 transnational gang. He was accused of responsibility for violent crimes and helping lead the gang’s criminal attacks throughout the U.S.

Villatoro Santos’ criminal case has morphed into a unique paradox: Justice Department prosecutors want his case dismissed. And it’s Villatoro Santos fighting to keep his case alive.

Strong earthquake near Argentina prompts tsunami threat in Chile

tsunami earthquake chileCoastal regions of southern Chile were told to evacuate after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake was recorded on Friday, May 2, off the coasts of Argentina and Chile, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The earthquake struck along the Drake Passage, which runs between South America and Antarctica, just before 9 a.m. ET. USGS pinpointed the location at 136 miles south of Ushuaia, a town located on the southern tip of Argentina.

Chile's National Disaster Prevention and Response Service said a coastal area of Magallanes region in the southern tip of the country should be evacuated due to the risk of a tsunami. Chilean President Gabriel Boric echoed the calls for evacuation in coastal parts of the Magallanes region, adding that resources would be made available to deal with any impact.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning center issued a tsunami threat for the region, saying that tsunami waves of about 3 to 10 feet above the tide level are possible along some coasts of Chile. Waves of a meter or less above tide level are possible for parts of the Antarctica coast.

Israeli reservists speak out against Gaza war as pressure on Netanyahu grows

israeli reservists speak out

Israel's war in Gaza grinds on, but opposition is growing. In recent weeks, thousands of Israeli reservists – from all branches of the military – have signed letters demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government stop the fighting and concentrate instead on reaching a deal to bring back the remaining 59 hostages being held by Hamas.

Eighteen months ago, few Israelis doubted the war's logic: to defeat Hamas and return the hostages.

For many, the January ceasefire and subsequent return of more than 30 hostages raised hopes that the war might soon end.

Russia's Medvedev says Ukraine minerals deal means Trump has forced Kyiv to pay for US aid

Dmitri Medvedev
Senior Russian security official Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday that the signing of a minerals deal between Ukraine and the United States meant U.S. President Donald Trump had forced Kyiv to pay for future U.S. military aid.
The deal, signed in Washington on Wednesday, will give the United States preferential access to new Ukrainian minerals deals and fund investment in Ukraine's reconstruction.
The Kyiv Post, citing diplomatic sources, said the Trump administration had also told Congress on Wednesday of its intention to green-light the export of defence-related products to Ukraine through direct commercial sales of $50 million or more, the first step of its kind since Trump's White House return.

Reuters could not immediately confirm that.
"Trump has broken the Kyiv regime to the point where they will have to pay for U.S. aid with mineral resources," Medvedev, a former Russian president who is now deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, wrote on Telegram.

Trump nominee gives misleading testimony about ties to alleged 'Nazi sympathizer'

Ed MartinEd Martin, President Trump's nominee for U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, is trying to distance himself from a convicted Jan. 6 Capitol rioter known for his racist and antisemitic rhetoric. Federal prosecutors have described the man, Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, as a "Nazi sympathizer."

But NPR's reporting — including a direct email exchange with Martin and a review of a series of podcast interviews he conducted — casts doubt on the accuracy of Martin's sworn testimony to the U.S. Senate. In written answers to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Martin now claims he was unaware of Hale-Cusanelli's past comments until at least August 2024.

Rubio now holds four titles after Waltz out as national security chief

Rubio holds four offices

Secretary of state Marco Rubio – ridiculed as “Little Marco” by Donald Trump during the 2016 Republican primaries – has become one of the most powerful players in the president’s cabinet.

Trump appointed Rubio interim national security adviser on Thursday after Mike Waltz was forced to leave the post, alongside his deputy, Alex Wong, as sources said officials had lost confidence in their leadership.

Waltz has been under intense pressure since the Signal scandal, in which he inadvertently added a journalist to a chat that included real-time operational details on US strikes in Yemen.

It’s an enormous rise for Rubio, the son of undocumented Cuban migrants, who now holds four titles in the Trump administration. Rubio is also the acting administrator for USAID and acting archivist for the National Archives and Records Administration.

Trump administration sues 4 blue states over climate suits, laws

Trup sues 4 states

The Trump administration has sued four Democratic-led states to try to block their climate-related lawsuits or laws.

On Wednesday, the administration sued Michigan and Hawaii in an attempt to block them from suing fossil fuel companies over climate change.

On Thursday, it sued New York and Vermont over their “climate Superfund” laws — which require fossil fuel companies to pay for emissions stemming from their products.

In lawsuits filed Wednesday, the Justice Department asked federal courts to permanently prevent Michigan and Hawaii from pursuing claims against fossil fuel companies.

The administration argued that it’s up to the federal government — not states — to regulate climate pollution and that therefore these lawsuits are unconstitutional.

Trump administration asks Supreme Court to end protected status for 600,000 Venezuelans

tps protectionThe Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to end deportation protections for more than 600,000 Venezuelans, the administration’s latest plea for the justices to intervene in President Trump’s sweeping immigration agenda.

The emergency application seeks to lift a San Francisco-based federal district judge’s ruling that halted the administration’s plans as a legal challenge proceeds, with that decision finding the abrupt policy change “smacks of racism.”

“Its order upsets the judgments of the political branches, prohibiting the Executive Branch from enforcing a time-sensitive immigration policy and indefinitely extending an immigration status that Congress intended to be ‘temporary,’” Solicitor General D. John Sauer wrote in the application.
