On March 25 the two of us, an orthopedic surgeon and a trauma surgeon, traveled to the Gaza Strip to work at Gaza European Hospital in Khan Younis. We were immediately overwhelmed by the overflown sewage and the distinct smell of gunpowder in the air. We made the short journey from the Rafah crossing to Khan Younis, where Gaza European Hospital stands as one of the last remaining semi-functional hospitals for the 2.5 million human beings—half of them children—in the Gaza Strip. As humanitarian surgeons we thought we had seen all manner of cruelty in the world, but neither one of us has ever experienced anything like what we found when we arrived in Gaza.

Ukrainian lawmakers have sparked anger by scrapping a clause in a draft law that would have given soldiers who have spent long periods fighting on the frontlines a chance to return home.

With Ukraine’s army outnumbered by Russia on the battlefield, “the offensive continues along the entire frontline. And currently it is impossible to weaken the defence forces”, Dmytro Lazutkin, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s defence ministry, said Wednesday on state TV.

“We cannot make hasty decisions now,” he added, explaining the military’s opposition to the provision.

A Florida woman was sentenced Tuesday to a month in prison and three months of home confinement for stealing and selling Joe Biden’s daughter’s diary four years ago to the conservative group Project Veritas.

Aimee Harris was sentenced in Manhattan federal court by Laura Taylor Swain, the judge who called the Palm Beach, Florida, woman’s actions “despicable”.

Harris pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in August 2022, admitting that she received $20,000 of the $40,000 that was paid by Project Veritas for personal items belonging to the president’s daughter, Ashley Biden.

Project Veritas, founded in 2010, identifies itself as a news organization. It is best known for conducting hidden-camera stings that have embarrassed news outlets, labor organizations and Democratic politicians.

One person was killed and multiple people injured, including two children, in a shooting in Washington DC on Wednesday evening.

Police have issued a public alert for the car believed to be carrying the gunman that fled the scene.

Details remain sparse but officials confirmed that a man was pronounced dead at the scene and that five others, including a nine-year-old and a 12-year-old, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials have confirmed that the shooting took place around 6.10pm in the city’s north-east, and that there are possibly two shooters at large. During a press briefing, they said the investigation is preliminary, but they believe the suspects exited the vehicle and began shooting.

Three sons and three grandchildren of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza, according to Hamas-affiliated media and Haniyeh.

Shehab, the Hamas-affiliated news agency, said in a Telegram post that three of Haniyeh’s sons and three of his grandchildren died in a bombing by Israeli forces. Haniyeh confirmed the deaths in an interview with Al Jazeera’s satellite channel and said that Israel acted in “the spirit of revenge and murder.”

The Hamas-run media office also condemned the deaths of the Haniyeh family in a statement. The office said the airstrike hit “a civilian car in which a number of his sons and grandchildren were traveling.”

A New York appeals court on Wednesday declined another bid by former President Trump to delay his hush money trial for the third time this week.

The former president’s lawyers took aim at three rulings by Judge Juan Merchan: refusing to recuse, not delaying the trial until the Supreme Court rules on Trump’s presidential immunity claim, and requiring Trump to seek permission before filing new motions before trial.

Trump is using a maneuver under New York state law, known as an Article 78 proceeding, that involves suing the judge over their decisions.

The filings were placed under seal and are not publicly available. The Hill has requested comment from Trump’s lawyers.

Former Attorney General Bill Barr on Wednesday denounced former President Trump’s exhortation for Congress to kill the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) as “crazy and reckless” and warned there will be “blood on people’s hands” if the intelligence community’s surveillance authority expires and there’s a terrorist attack on the United States.

Barr, who served in Trump’s Cabinet in 2019 and 2020, noted that Trump at one time supported the expanded surveillance powers authorized under Section 702 of FISA and warned that political “posturing” against extending that authority would be dangerous to national security.

“I think it’s crazy and reckless to not move forward with FISA. It’s our principal tool protecting us from terrorist attacks. We’re living through a time where those threats have never been higher, so it’s blinding us, it’s blinding our allies,” Barr told The Hill in an interview.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) recently suggested international offices could find Israel’s bombardment of Gaza constitutes as genocide in the enclave.

The Massachusetts Democrat was delivering remarks last Friday at the Islamic Center of Boston in Wayland, Mass. when an audience member asked for her opinion on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) January ruling that found it is “plausible” that Israel is committing genocide in its war with Hamas in Gaza.

“So I think… that what’s happening now is there’s going to be a long and involved debate over what constitutes genocide, when you ask a legal question. For me, it is far more important to say what Israel is doing is wrong. And it is wrong,” per her spokesperson.
