At least 322 children killed since Israel's new Gaza offensive, Unicef says

300+ children killed since cease fire

The United Nations agency for children says that at least 322 children are reported to have been killed since Israel launched a renewed offensive in Gaza two weeks ago.

Unicef said at least 609 other children were reportedly wounded during the same period.

"The ceasefire in Gaza provided a desperately needed lifeline for Gaza's children and hope for a path to recovery," said Unicef Executive Director Catherine Russell. "But children have again been plunged into a cycle of deadly violence and deprivation."

Israel launched its renewed Gaza offensive on 18 March, blaming Hamas for rejecting a new US proposal to extend the ceasefire and free the 59 hostages still held captive in Gaza.

Iceland volcanoTourists and residents of a town in south-west Iceland have been evacuated after a volcanic eruption.

The volcano is close to the fishing town of Grindavik and the famous Blue Lagoon spa, which is a popular attraction. A small number of people refused to evacuate the town, local media reported.

The volcano has been spewing lava and smoke in a fiery display of orange and red since Tuesday morning, creating a huge crack in the ground which has grown to 1.2km (0.75 miles) long.

Moscow responds to ‘very angry’ Trump while Putin drafts 160,000 men for war

putinMoscow has offered another phone call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin after the US president said he was “p***** off” with the Russian leader.

Mr Trump told NBC News he was very angry after Mr Putin criticised the credibility of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. The US president suggested he could impose secondary tariffs of 25-50 per cent on buyers of Russian oil.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was continuing to work with Washington and that Mr Putin remained open to contacts with Mr Trump.

A call between both the presidents, Mr Peskov said, could be arranged at short notice if necessary, though none was scheduled for this week.

But Washington must not be misled by Putin’s “stalling tactics”, outgoing German foreign minister Anna Baerbock said in a statement during a farewell visit to Kyiv.

Ex-Costa Rica president says US visa revoked after criticism of Trump

Oscasar Arias

Former Costa Rican president and Nobel winner Óscar Arias said on Tuesday that the US had revoked his visa to enter the country, weeks after he criticized Donald Trump on social media saying he was behaving like “a Roman emperor”.

Arias, 84, was president between 1986 and 1990 and again between 2006 and 2010. A self-declared pacifist, he won the 1987 Nobel peace prize for his role in brokering peace during the Central American conflicts of the 1980s.

Arias also promoted a free trade agreement with the US during his last term and in 2007 established diplomatic ties with China.

“I received an email from the US government informing me that they have suspended the visa I have in my passport. The communication was very terse, it does not give reasons. One could have conjectures,” Arias told reporters outside his home, without elaborating on his suspicions.

Palestinians protest Hamas in a rare public show of dissent in Gaza

Gazans protest HamaThousands of Palestinians marched between the wreckage of a heavily destroyed town in northern Gaza on Wednesday in the second day of anti-war protests, with many chanting against Hamas in a rare display of public anger against the militant group.

The protests, which centered mainly on Gaza’s north, appeared to be aimed generally against the war, with protesters calling for an end to 17 months of deadly fighting with Israel that has made life in Gaza insufferable.

But protesters also leveled unusually direct and public criticism of Hamas, which has quashed dissent violently in the past in Gaza, a territory it still rules months into the war with Israel.

In the town of Beit Lahiya, where a similar protest took place Tuesday, about 3,000 people demonstrated, with many chanting “the people want the fall of Hamas.” In the hard-hit Shijaiyah neighborhood of Gaza City, dozens of men chanted “Out, out out! Hamas get out!”

IDF will seize Gaza land permanently until Hamas releases hostages, DM Katz says

Israeli DM Katz

The IDF will permanently seize parts of the Gaza Strip if Hamas doesn't release the hostages held in captivity, Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Friday.

"I have instructed the IDF to seize additional areas in Gaza, evacuate the population, and expand security zones around Gaza to protect Israeli communities and IDF soldiers. The more Hamas persists in its refusal to release the hostages, the more territory it will lose, which will be annexed to Israel," Katz said.

"If the hostages are not released, Israel will continue to take more and more territory in the Strip for permanent control," he concluded.

On Thursday, Katz approved the continuation of military operations in Gaza.

Katz highlighted the importance of continuing the military pressure on Gaza until the hostages are released.

Israeli strikes in Gaza kill 9, including aid workers and journalists, witnesses say

9 killed in GazaTwo back-to-back Israeli airstrikes in the northern Gaza city of Beit Lahiya killed at least nine people on Saturday, according to Gaza civil defense. Witnesses and Gaza health officials say several of those killed were aid workers and journalists.

The Israeli military says it was targeting two terrorists operating a drone in the area. In a statement, it says it hit those individuals, and then struck again when "a number of additional terrorists" collected the drone operating equipment and entered a vehicle.

But the head of Gaza civil defense, Mahmoud Basal, told NPR they were aid workers from the London-based Al-Khair Foundation, along with several journalists working with the group.

TVNL Comment:  This is so terrible.  There is no cease-fire, only attacks on unarmed Palestinians, no matter if they are aid workers and journalists.  Doing nothing is being complicit.  Think about that. Do something to stop this horror.
