Justices rule ex-Bush officials can't be sued in terrorism case

SC Justice Joseph KennedyThe Supreme Court on Monday said former George W. Bush administration officials can’t be held liable for the unlawful detainment and abuse suffered by undocumented immigrants detained after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

In a 4-2 ruling, the court ruled that six men arrested during an investigation into the attack after they were found living in the country illegally could not sue the officials, including former Attorney General John Ashcroft and former FBI Director Robert Mueller.

The men, all of whom are of Arab or South Asian descent, claimed the federal officials violated their due process and equal protection rights by holding them in restrictive conditions of confinement.

Russia ends military coordination with U.S. over downed Syrian plane

Russia threatens to end coordination with US over downed airplane in syriaRussia said it is ending logistical military coordination with the United States and threatened to shoot down any aircraft west of the Euphrates River after the U.S. Navy shot down a Syrian regime jet.

The "deconfliction" communication agreement between Washington, D.C., and Moscow was previously established to avoid problematic encounters while aircraft operated above Syrian territory.

The U.S.-led international coalition fighting the Islamic State on Sunday said it shot down a Syrian regime fighter jet because it was attacking the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces militia near Tabqah. The SDF is leading the ground offensive in Syria to capture the Islamic State's stronghold of Raqqa.

Activist behind Planned Parenthood videos may go to jail

Activist behind Planned Parenthood video may go to jailThe anti-abortion activist behind the videos accusing Planned Parenthood of selling “baby parts,” as he put it, could be going to prison. And now his criminal defense lawyers could join him.

Late last month, David Daleiden and his team of criminal attorneys allegedly flouted multiple injunctions and court-issued seals by posting more shocking videos of abortion providers and identifying 14 of the John/Jane Does participating in the state criminal complaint against him and his recording partner Sandra Merritt. Those names were previously under a court seal.

The radical idea behind Trump’s EPA rollbacks

Scott PruittThe Trump administration isn’t just pushing to dramatically shrink the Environmental Protection Agency, chop a third of its budget and hobble its regulatory powers. It’s also trying to permanently limit the EPA’s mission — while portraying doing so as a return to the agency's roots.

What Administrator Scott Pruitt calls his “Back to Basics” agenda would refocus the agency on narrow goals such as cleaning up toxic waste and providing safe drinking water — the kinds of issues that inspired the EPA’s creation in 1970 amid a public outcry about burning rivers and smog-filled skies. But it would abandon the Obama administration’s climate regulations, along with other efforts that Pruitt argues exceed the agency’s legal authority.

9/11 still killing as retired cop and firefighter die of cancers

9/11 first responders still dyingTwo more first responders have died of 9/11-related cancers, officials said Friday.  Retired FDNY Firefighter and Brooklyn native William Gormley, 53, died following a short battle with lung cancer Wednesday, his family said.

A day earlier, retired NYPD Detective William Kinane, 60, of Breezy Point, Queens, died of a 9/11-related illness.

The two deaths threatened to overwhelm the Marine Park Funeral Home — which serves both Marine Park and the Rockaways — so Gormley’s family was asked to move the service to another location, family members said.

Special counsel is investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice, officials say

Bob MuellerThe special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.

The move by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to investigate Trump’s conduct marks a major turning point in the nearly year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said.

Emirati ambassador to Trump: Remove US airbase from Qatar

Ambassador Yousef al OtaibaThe United Arab Emirates' ambassador to the United States wants President Trump to use the U.S. airbase in Qatar as a political tool to press the country's government on supporting extremism.

“The air base is a very nice insurance policy against any additional pressure,” Ambassador Yousef al-Otaiba said Tuesday. “Maybe someone in Congress should have a hearing and just say, you know, ’Should we consider moving it?’”
