It appears – once again – that an aggressive marketing campaign by the two largest U.S. tobacco manufacturers has helped defeat a cigarette excise-tax increase in California.
With 100 percent of the precincts reporting Wednesday, Proposition 29 trailed by a 51 percent to 49 percent margin, or by 63,176 votes out of the 3.85 million cast, according to The Associated Press.

Western Lifestyle to Surge Global Cancer Rates by 75% Come 2030
According to new research, it is projected that global cancer rates will increase by 75 percent come 2030 based on current trends. It is well documented that the Western lifestyle, drowning in poor eating habits, excess drinking, and habitual smoking, is one of the worst lifestyles for your health, but it seems that many developing countries are adopting this lifestyle.
Conducted by scientists at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon France, and the American Cancer Society, the researchers estimated that 22.2 million new cancer cases would appear in 184 different countries by 2030 – an increase based on current cancer trends, demographic projections and how the transition into the Western lifestyle will breed cancer in developing countries and other nations. The 22.2 million estimate is up from the estimated 12.7 cancer cases in 2008.
Meet the Corporate Front Groups Fighting to Make Sure You Can't Know What's in Your Food
What do a former mouthpiece for tobacco and big oil, a corporate-interest PR flack, and the regional director of a Monsanto-funded tort reform group have in common?
They’re all part of the anti-labeling PR team that will soon unleash a massive advertising and PR campaign in California, designed to scare voters into rejecting the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act.
Narcolepsy traced to specific vaccine batches
A new Swedish study shows that all Swedes who developed narcolepsy from the swine flu vaccine Pandemrix received the vaccine from 12 of the 35 batches, despite the Swedish Medical Products Agency’s (Läkemedelsverket) previous claim that no such connection exists.
Over 220 Swedes, most of them children, developed narcolepsy as a side effect from the Swine flu vaccine Pandemrix, according to the reports filed with insurance company Läkemedelsförsäkringen.
Overdosed: Over 25% of Kids on Prescription Drugs
A report released by Medco Health Solutions Inc., the biggest U.S. pharmacy-benefit manager, shows that over 25% of children and teens are involved with taking prescription medications – although that number may have risen over the past couple years. Based on the company’s data from 2009, 7% of U.S. children are on a shocking two or more drugs.
Despite the alarming amount of children being fed prescription medication, many of these drugs were intended or tested for only adult use.
Cell phones: 50 percent increase in frontal and temporal lobe tumors in children
The Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom discovered a 50 percent increase in frontal and temporal lobe tumors in children during the ten year span covering 1999 to 2009. Was this a result of cell phone radiation?
The Department of Health in the UK would appear to think so. One in three children under the age of ten currently has a cellphone in their possession. The governmental agency put out the following statement: "Children should only use mobile phones for essential purposes and keep all calls short."
Flawed Pharma Study Demonizing Vitamins and Minerals Debunked
In the article Iowa Women’s Health Study, much of the piece takes many things that are widely known as beneficial within a large number of vitamin supplements, and links some of these to various deaths in which people with diseases would essentially overdose themselves on vitamins in a desperate grab to fight off the disease. The article then discounts the fact that many people do not even use vitamins except for when they are sick, wrongfully linking an absurd amount of deaths directly to the use of vitamins and other supplements. As an example, a person was diagnosed with a life threatening disease, and in a sense of sheer panic began using as much as 40 supplements all at once, going up from using literally nothing the previous day. This example was then taken out of context and used as a source of evidence that supplements are in fact potentially deadly – a completely biased and ridiculous claim!
