Ukraine war briefing: Europe ready with sanctions if no ceasefire after Istanbul talks

Europe ready with sanctions
  • European leaders have indicated they will press ahead with further sanctions against Russia – whether or not the US does likewise if talks in Turkey on Thursday do not produce a ceasefire. The French president, Emmanuel Macron, said Europe would impose new sanctions if Moscow did not agree to the 30-day ceasefire. The German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, warned Russia on Tuesday that it would face fresh European sanctions if there was no “real progress” this week towards peace in Ukraine, as he urged Putin to meet Zelenskyy. The European Union has already imposed 16 rounds of sanctions on Russia since Putin invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

  • It remained unclear on Tuesday evening whether Vladimir Putin would accept Voldoymyr Zelenskyy’s challenge for the two presidents to meet in person. Zelenskyy is travelling to Ankara, the Turkish capital, to meet with its president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and has said he will go to Istanbul if Putin shows up, writes Shaun Walker. “If Putin does not arrive and plays games, it is the final point that he does not want to end the war.”

  • The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, said in Copenhagen on Tuesday: “I think it’s a good move if they sit down … But I don’t think he dares, Putin.” If Putin does not attend, and Zelenskyy does not either, talks are still expected to be held at a lower level between Ukrainian and Russian delegations.

White House welcomes Afrikaners to the U.S., but drops protection for Afghan allies

Afghan families en route to US

As many as 9,000 Afghan refugees are at risk of deportation, as the Trump administration has ended the temporary protected status (TPS) that allowed them to stay in the U.S. legally. The White House says their country is no longer dangerous for them, a contention that confounds Afghanistan watchers.

"It's a death penalty for them if they return," said Zia Ghafoori, who worked as an interpreter in combat with U.S. Army Special Forces from 2002 to 2014.

Ghafoori was received by President Trump at the White House in 2019 and became a U.S. citizen in 2020.

"He's a big supporter of our veterans and that's what we love about the president," Ghafoori said. "Maybe he's not aware how the policy is going to affect our Afghan allies. I don't know what's happening behind the scenes."

Major League Baseball lifts lifetime ban on Pete Rose and 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson

Pete Rose

The commissioner of Major League Baseball has removed Pete Rose, 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson and 15 other deceased players from the sport's permanent ineligibility list.

The move clears the way for Rose, Jackson and others to potentially be voted into the Hall of Fame.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred made the decision after the Rose family filed an application to change the policy following Rose's death last year at age 83.

Rose, baseball's all-time hits leader and a star player of his hometown Cincinnati Reds, was kicked out of the sport in 1989 after the player-manager was found to have bet on his own team. For decades afterwards, there were calls for him to be reinstated to the game and made eligible to be elected into the Hall of Fame.

US and Saudi Arabia sign $142bn arms deal as Trump to meet Syrian leader

Saudi arms deal

The United States and Saudi Arabia have signed a $142bn arms deal touted by the White House as the “largest defence sales agreement in history” in the first stop of Donald Trump’s four-day diplomatic tour to the Gulf states aimed at securing big deals and spotlighting the benefits of Trump’s transactional foreign policy.

During the trip, the White House also confirmed that Trump would meet with Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the former rebel commander whose forces helped overthrow Bashar al-Assad in 2024. The informal meeting will be the first face-to-face meeting between a US president and a Syrian leader since 2000, when Bill Clinton met with the late leader Hafez al-Assad in Geneva.

Speaking at an investment forum on Tuesday, Trump said that he planned to lift sanctions on Syria after holding talks with Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed bin Salman and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness,” Trump said.

Newark airport had three air traffic controllers on duty instead of 14

traffic control newark

New Jersey’s Newark Liberty airport, one of three major airports serving New York City, had just three air traffic controllers on duty on Monday, which was well short of the 14 called for and forced air regulators to delay arriving flights for up to seven hours.

The air traffic controller shortfall, first reported by the New York Times, comes amid a growing number of problems for the hub. In a little more than a week, Newark has suffered three communications blackouts, rendering the control tower unable to track or communicate with planes for up to 90 seconds.

The most recent failure, on Sunday morning, came as government and airline officials have made multiple efforts to reassure airline passengers that flying into or out of the airport is safe.

But on Monday evening, during the 3pm to 10pm shift, the group that manages Newark air traffic from Philadelphia was operating with one or two fully certified controllers, the outlet reported – far fewer than the 14 controllers agreed on between the controllers union and air traffic control regulators.

Wisconsin judge arrested in immigration case indicted by federal grand jury – as it happened

Wisconsin judge indicted

A federal grand jury indicted Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan on May 13 on charges that she tried to assist an undocumented immigrant escape arrest from her courtroom last month, putting her at the center of the growing dispute between President Donald Trump and the judiciary.

The two-page indictment accuses Dugan, 66, of obstructing a U.S. agency and concealing an individual to prevent an arrest. The two charges carry a maximum penalty of six years in prison and a $350,000 fine, but sentences in cases involving nonviolent offenses typically are much shorter.

Dugan is expected to enter a plea at a May 15 hearing. But members of her defense team issued this statement: "As she said after her unnecessary arrest, Judge Dugan asserts her innocence and looks forward to being vindicated in court."

The indictment came after a string of witnesses entered the federal courthouse throughout the day on May 13 to testify before the grand jury.

Ocasio-Cortez warns of ‘problem’ if Democratic colleagues are arrested

AOCRep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) warned Trump administration officials they would soon face a “problem” if they continued arresting her fellow Democratic colleagues.

Ocasio-Cortez specifically called out Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and border czar Tom Homan, and she accused the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of using “public intimidation.”

“If anyone’s breaking the law in this situation, it’s not members of Congress, it’s the Department of Homeland Security,” she said during an Instagram video posted Sunday. “It’s people like Tom Homan and Secretary Kristi Noem.”

“You lay a finger on someone, on Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman … or any of the representatives that were there, you lay a finger on them, we are going to have a problem,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “Because the people who are breaking the law are the people not abiding by it.”

Walgreens closing dozens of stores across 17 states: Here’s where

Walgreens closingsDozens of Walgreens locations are preparing to close in the coming weeks and months after the pharmacy giant announced plans to shutter about 1,200 stores to turn around its struggling U.S. business.

In October, Walgreens said about 500 store closures would happen during the fiscal year, but didn’t explain when the remainder would take place.

As of Tuesday, however, some of its more than 8,000 stores have been marked for impending closure online.

“This location will permanently close on May 22. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause,” a banner on the location page for the Walgreens in East Haven, Connecticut, reads, offering customers information about transferring their prescriptions to another Walgreens.

Menendez brothers eligible for parole in 1989 murders of parents, paving way for possible release

Menendez brothers

A Los Angeles judge ruled Tuesday that the Menendez brothers are eligible for parole in the August 1989 shotgun deaths of their parents, a decision that moves the two men significantly closer to possible release from prison.

Erik and Lyle Menendez, held in custody since 1990 and originally sentenced to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, were each handed a new sentence of 50 years to life by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic.

"They (the brothers) had tears and they were smiling," Menendez attorney Cliff Gardner told Los Angeles television station KNBC-TV, relaying what he saw from the video link in court immediately after the ruling.
