US whistleblowers say they were fired for raising fair housing concerns

Whistle blowerTwo attorneys in the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) anti-discrimination division said they were fired on Monday, a week after going public with a whistleblower report alleging that the Trump administration had dismantled efforts to combat residential segregation.

Paul Osadebe and Palmer Heenan worked in Hud’s Office of Fair Housing (OFH), which is tasked with bringing cases against parties accused of discriminating against tenants and homebuyers under a landmark civil rights law. In a report sent last month to Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren, Heenan, Osadebe and two anonymous colleagues wrote that fighOn Monday, Osadebe was called into a meeting with HUD managers, who informed him he was being placed on leave in anticipation of firing. Masked federal agents patrol downtown Chicago

Ice agents in ChicagoFederal immigration agents patrolled downtown Chicago on Sunday as the Trump administration ramps up immigration crackdowns in major cities across the country.

The Border Patrol agents spotted downtown were armed, masked and camouflaged, according to NewsNation, The Hill’s sister network.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said hundreds of ICE officers were downtown as part of its “Midway Blitz” operation in Chicago, which began on Sept. 8, NewsNation reported.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that agents made multiple arrests downtown, including in the River North neighborhood Sunday morning.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a post on the social platform X that 11 people were arrested outside an ICE detention facility in Broadview, Ill., on Saturday amid a large protest at the center.

President Donald J. Trump’s Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict

peace planThe White House released a 20-point plan Monday afternoon for a ceasefire and path forward in the Gaza Strip.

Among the points in the proposal, President Trump would chair an international “board of peace” to govern and reconstruct the Gaza Strip as part of the 20-point plan, describing an end to the war between Israel and Hamas and a transition toward peace.

Read the first five points here, as released from the White House:

1. Gaza will be a deradicalized terror-free zone that does not pose a threat to its neighbors.
2. Gaza will be redeveloped for the benefit of the people of Gaza, who have suffered more than enough.
3. If both sides agree to this proposal, the war will immediately end. Israeli forces will withdraw to the agreed upon line to prepare for a hostage release. During this time, all military operations, including aerial and artillery bombardment, will be suspended, and battle lines will remain frozen until conditions are met for the complete staged withdrawal.
4. Within 72 hours of Israel publicly accepting this agreement, all hostages, alive and deceased, will be returned.
5. Once all hostages are released, Israel will release 250 life sentence prisoners plus 1700 Gazans who were detained after October 7th 2023, including all women and children detained in that context. For every Israeli hostage whose remains are released, Israel will release the remains of 15 deceased Gazans.

TVNL Comment: The President of the US has conspired with a wanted war criminal to present a peace plan for a country not included in any part of the plan.  This is Donald Trump's audition for his Nobel Peace Prize dream. His guest on the platform, along with an israeli flag, evidenced the partnership betwee the two men. There was no Palestinian flag.  This was an embarrassingly one sided 'peace plan.'

Democrats Accuse Mike Johnson Of Stalling New Member Swearing-In Over Epstein Files

Mike JohnsonAs the two parties square off over an imminent government shutdown, Democrats are accusing House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) of keeping the House of Representatives out of session to delay a vote on the Epstein files.

The House had been scheduled to vote on Monday and Tuesday, but Johnson canceled the votes in order to put more pressure on Senate Democrats to accept a government funding bill Republicans pushed through the House earlier this month.

The canceled votes are also pushing back the swearing-in of Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva, a Democrat who won a special election last week to fill her late father’s Arizona seat. Grijalva would provide the crucial 218th signature on a “discharge petition” forcing a vote on legislation to make the Justice Department release its investigatory files on the late sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

“Any delay in swearing in Representative-elect Grijalva unnecessarily deprives her constituents of representation and calls into question if the motive behind the delay is to further avoid the release of the Epstein files,” Rep. Katherine Clark (Mass.), the No. 2 Democrat in the House, complained in a letter to Johnson on Monday.

What does Eric Adams abandoning NYC mayoral race mean for Mamdani and Cuomo?

Eric Adams drios ourNew York City Mayor Eric Adams’ Sept. 28 announcement that he is dropping his bid for reelection raised hopes among conservatives that Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a socialist state Assembly member, can be stopped by former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani.

Adams, a centrist Democrat like Cuomo, was also making an independent bid after a federal indictment on corruption charges that were dropped by the Justice Department after Trump took office.

But it remains unlikely that Cuomo can surmount Mamdani's commanding lead in recent polls if Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa remains in the race.

Michigan church attack left 4 people dead. Here's what we know so far.

Michigan church shootingA gunman left a Michigan community reeling over the weekend after an attack at a church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, killed four people and injured eight others.

Police said the Sept. 28 shooting at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was carried out by a gunman and former Marine, 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford.

Sanford, of Burton, rammed a pickup truck bearing two American flags into the chapel during morning services, set it ablaze, and used an assault rifle to open fire on hundreds of worshippers. Police said he used gasoline to set the building on fire.

A local political candidate told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, that Sanford had ranted against Mormons during a conversation a week before the attack.

One victim, a church member, died at the scene, and a second died at a local hospital. At a press conference on the night of Sunday, Sept. 28, Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said that two others who were inside the establishment had been identified in the charred debris, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Hundreds of thousands flee Israeli military's devastating assault on Gaza City

Gazans fleeHaving lost his eyesight in an Israeli airstrike, Ahmed Daif Allah spent part of the past week stumbling blindly toward an uncertain safety.

“The journey is incredibly tough, more than anyone could imagine,” Ahmed’s wife, Rafiq, told a local journalist who provided their footage to NBC News. “There is no pity, there is no humanity,” added Rafiq, who led her husband by the hand throughout their dayslong walk from Gaza City to the southern part of the enclave.

The couple is among the hundreds of thousands who have fled Gaza’s most populous area since Israel launched its new offensive on Tuesday, heeding Israeli leaflets and social media warnings to head south.

Avichay Adraee, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Arabic-language spokesman, said Friday that its forces would continue to “operate with unprecedented force" against Hamas and other terrorist organizations in Gaza City and urged civilians to leave the famine-stricken area.

US blocks UN call for Gaza ceasefire for sixth time

US casts 6th vetoThe US has for the sixth time vetoed a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council that would have demanded an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.

US deputy Middle East envoy Morgan Ortagus said the text did not go far enough in condemning Hamas or recognise Israel's right to defend itself.

All 14 other members of the Security Council voted in favour of the draft resolution - which described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "catastrophic" and called on Israel to lift all aid restrictions.

It comes as the UN's humanitarian office warns that the last lifelines for civilians are collapsing in Gaza City as Israel expands its military offensive.

On the global stage, Israel and its closest ally look increasingly isolated.

Speaking prior to the vote, Ortagus said Washington's opposition to the resolution should "come as no surprise".

"It fails to condemn Hamas or recognise Israel's right to defend itself, and it wrongly legitimises the false narratives benefitting Hamas, which have sadly found currency in this council," she said.

After the vote, UN members reacted swiftly to express their disappointment.
