Putin proposes direct Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul on May 15

Putin proposes direct taks with Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15, “without preconditions” to achieve “lasting peace” and “eliminate the root causes” of the three-year conflict.

The offer, delivered early on Sunday, came hours after the leaders of Ukraine, France, Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire to start on Monday.

The leaders, who were meeting in Kyiv, said their call is backed by United States President Donald Trump and threatened “massive” new sanctions on Moscow if it did not agree with their plan.

‘No one’s buying anything now’: how tariffs are striking a blow to historic Chinatowns

Chinatown losing because of ta

On a balmy afternoon last month, Amy Tran unboxed a delivery at Yue Wa Market, a small grocery and herbal medicine shop in Los Angeles’s Chinatown that she opened 17 years ago.

The package contained two dozen units of Shou Wu Chih, a Chinese herbal concoction known to rebuild kidney function and promote hair health. The shipment arrived two weeks after the US implemented new tariffs on Chinese imports, so her distributor charged her $115, a $35 markup from her previous order.

Tran said she had no choice but to increase the retail price from $6 to $7. It’s a steep up-charge for her customers, who are primarily Chinese seniors living off food stamps, some barely able to afford to buy a piece of fresh fruit or vegetable.

Federal judge temporarily halts Trump's sweeping government overhaul

Court pauses Trump reduction of fed. govt.

A federal judge in San Francisco has temporarily blocked the Trump administration's sweeping overhaul of the federal government.

The ruling from U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, a Clinton appointee, came after a hearing Friday in a lawsuit filed by a coalition of labor unions, nonprofits and local governments.

The plaintiffs argue in their complaint that President Trump's efforts to "radically restructure and dismantle the federal government" without any authorization from Congress violate the Constitution.

Illston agreed with the plaintiffs, asserting in the hearing that Supreme Court precedent makes clear that while the president does have the authority to seek changes at agencies, he must do so in lawful ways.

Defunding the NEH threatens more than just the humanities

Princeton

The National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965 declared that the humanities are essential for enhancing America’s global leadership “in the realm of ideas and of the spirit,” and for supporting U.S. democracy, which “demands wisdom and vision in its citizens.”

The National Endowment for the Humanities was born from these declarations. It is the only federal agency dedicated to the humanities, encompassing history, literature, linguistics, law, philosophy, archaeology, language, comparative religion and ethics. Its companion agency, the National Endowment for the Arts, is the largest federal funder of the arts and arts education in the country, supporting communities to engage with and practice such creative work as painting, sculpture, music and dance.

The 1965 founding legislation captures the government’s original belief that the humanities are vital for the greater good of society, enabling citizens to flourish both as individuals and in their civic lives. The humanities embodied then — and still embody now — the high value Americans should place on preserving the nation’s cultural heritage and fostering respect for the diverse beliefs and values that define our nation.

Ocasio-Cortez slams GOP threats to Medicaid: ‘They’re robbing people’

AOC

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) slammed Republicans for threats to Medicaid funding, arguing they’re “robbing people” to benefit “the rich.”

She’s been a vocal critic of proposed reductions for the program that provides access to healthcare for low-income families and individuals with disabilities.

“They’re robbing people in order to hand it over to the rich,” Ocasio-Cortez told Rolling Stone. “Medicaid is one of the largest insurers in the United States of America.”

GOP members have already slated reductions totaling over $800 billion through recommendations from the House’s Energy and Commerce Committee. Two controversial Medicaid funding cut proposals have already been nixed or reconsidered, however. Members of the committee will hold a markup for the budget reconciliation bill this week.

4.1-magnitude earthquake shakes East Tennessee and Knoxville

Tennessee quake

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake shook Knoxville and East Tennessee at 9:04 a.m. ET May 10, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake originated near Greenback, Tennessee, which is 30 miles southwest of Knoxville. The earthquake was about 15 miles deep, the USGS says, which is considered a shallow quake.

It was the seventh earthquake with a 4.0 magnitude or greater since 1900 and the first since a 4.4-magnitude quake hit Decatur in 2018. The largest earthquake in East Tennessee since 1900 was a 4.7-magnitude quake in Alcoa in 1973.

The Knoxville Fire Department did not receive any reports of damage, spokesman Mark Wilbanks said, nor did the Knoxville Police Department.

India And Pakistan Agree To A Ceasefire After Their Worst Military Escalation In Decades

India-Pakistan cease fireIndia and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire Saturday after U.S.-led talks to end the most serious military confrontation between the nuclear-armed rivals in decades.

The deal was expected to bring a swift end to weeks of escalating clashes, including missile and drone strikes, triggered by the massacre of tourists by gunmen last month that India blames on Pakistan, which denies the charge. Dozens of civilians have been killed on both sides since then. But multiple explosions were heard in two large cities of India-controlled Kashmir hours after the countries agreed to the deal.

The first word of the truce came from U.S. President Donald Trump, who posted on his Truth Social platform that India and Pakistan had agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire: “Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced the truce on Geo News, saying that Saudi Arabia and Turkey played an important role in facilitating the deal.

US confirms plan for private firms to deliver Gaza aid despite UN alarm

Private firms to take over Gaza aid.

The US has confirmed that a new system for providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza through private companies is being prepared, as Israel's blockade continues for a third month.

US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said "distribution centres" protected by security contractors would provide food and other supplies to over a million people initially, as part of an effort to prevent Hamas stealing aid.

He denied Israel would take part in aid delivery or distribution, but said its forces would secure the centres' perimeters.

It comes as details emerged about the controversial plan, which UN agencies have reiterated they will not co-operate with because it appears to "weaponize" aid.

Kremlin insists arm deliveries to Ukraine stop before agreeing to ceasefire

Dmitri PeskovIn an exclusive interview with ABC News, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin needed to see "certain dynamics" on the battlefield before agreeing to an extended ceasefire, insisting arms deliveries from Ukraine's allies must stop before there can be a pause in hostilities.

"Otherwise, it will be advantage for Ukraine. Ukraine will continue their total mobilization, bringing new troops to front line. Ukraine will use this period to train new military personnel and to give a rest to their existing ones," Peskov told ABC News' Chief Global Affairs Correspondent and "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz. "So why should we grant such an advantage to Ukraine?"

Peskov also asserted that Ukraine is "not ready for immediate negotiations," denying that Putin was the one dragging his feet.

"President Putin is doing whatever is possible to solve the problem, to achieve a settlement through peaceful and diplomatic means. But having no peaceful and democratic means at hand, we have to continue military operation," he said.
