Farewell to USAID: Reflections on the agency that President Trump dismantled

Farewell to USAID

A storied US agency, one that began under President Kennedy in 1961 with the aim of providing global stability through a wide array of humanitarian aid and development programs, has now formally closed.

Since January, the Trump administration has systematically dismantled the US Agency for International Development (USAID), canceling thousands of contracts and firing or placing on leave thousands of employees within the U.S. and overseas.

In a public statement issued in early February, the U.S. State Department wrote that USAID "has long strayed from its original mission of responsibly advancing American interests abroad, and it is now abundantly clear that significant portions of USAID funding are not aligned with the core national interests of the United States."

To course correct, Secretary of State Marco Rubio was appointed as Acting Administrator of USAID. And as of July 1, the remainder of the aid agency will be absorbed into the State Department.

Trump administration raises possibility of stripping Mamdani of US citizenship

Mamdani

The Trump administration has raised the possibility of stripping Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral candidate for New York City, of his US citizenship as part of a crackdown against foreign-born citizens convicted of certain offences.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, appeared to pave the way for an investigation into Mamdani’s status after Andy Ogles, a rightwing Republican representative for Tennessee, called for his citizenship to be revoked on the grounds that he may have concealed his support for “terrorism” during the naturalization process.

Mamdani, 33, who was born in Uganda to ethnic Indian parents, became a US citizen in 2018 and has attracted widespread media attention – and controversy – over his vocal support for Palestinian rights.

Donald Trump threatens to arrest NYC mayoral Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani

MamdaniPresident Donald Trump has escalated his attacks on New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, and now Mamdani and New York Democrats are responding.

Trump threatened to arrest Mamdani if as mayor he follows through on pledges not to assist federal officials enforcing immigration laws.

“Well then, we’ll have to arrest him,” Trump told reporters on July 1 while visiting a detention center in Florida. Trump that he would “be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation.”

Trump also said "a lot of people are saying he's here illegally," which is false. Mamdani is a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Uganda, who immigrated to the United States with his parents − film director Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani − at the age of seven.

Undocumented immigrants face massive fines under new Trump rule

ICE protestMillions of people living illegally in the United States are facing stiff new fines from the Trump administration as the White House pressures migrants to self-deport to their birth countries.

A newly issued rule allows federal immigration authorities to fine people up to $500 for illegally crossing the border and $1,000 per day for not leaving the United States if so ordered. The measure also allows a $10,000 fine for people who said they would leave voluntarily but haven't.

Crossing the border illegally or overstaying a visa is typically considered a civil violation, and the White House said the fines reflect the administration's efforts to reduce illegal immigration.

US citizen arrested during Ice raid in what family describes as ‘kidnapping’

US Citizen arrested during ICE raid

A US citizen was arrested during an immigration raid in downtown Los Angeles this week in what her family described as a “kidnapping” by federal immigration agents.

Andrea Velez, 32, had just been dropped off at work by her mother and sister, the pair said, when they saw agents grab her.

“My mom looked at the rear mirror and she saw how my sister was attacked from the back,” Estrella Rosas told ABC7. “She was like: ‘They’re kidnapping your sister.’”

Velez, a graduate of Cal Poly Pomona, was taken into custody during an immigration raid on Tuesday. In video captured from the scene, agents can be seen surrounding her as a crowd gathers in the street and police officers stand by. Meanwhile, Rosas and her mother, who has residency but is not a citizen, screamed from a nearby vehicle for help.

Crockett questions Melania Trump’s reported ‘Einstein visa’: ‘The math ain’t mathin”

Jasmine Crockett

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) questioned first lady Melania Trump’s reported “Einstein visa” at a House hearing Wednesday.

“Let me remind y’all that Melania, the first lady, a model — and when I say model, I’m not talking about Tyra Banks, Cindy Crawford or Naomi Campbell level — applied for and was given an EB-1 visa, and what that stands for is an Einstein visa. Now y’all that don’t know, let me tell you how you receive an Einstein visa,” Crockett said.

“You’re supposed to have some sort of significant achievement, like being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize or a Pulitzer, being an Olympic medalist, or having other sustained extraordinary abilities and success in sciences, arts, education, business or athletics. Last time I checked, the first lady had none of those accolades under her belt,” the Texas Democrat added. “It doesn’t take an Einstein to see that the math ain’t mathin’ here.”

The Washington Post has reported that Trump in 2001 was given a green card via the elite EB-1 program. The program has been used by people such as academic researchers and multinational business executives, as well as people who have demonstrated “sustained national and international acclaim,” according to the Post.

Trump Melts Down Over '100% Communist Lunatic' Zohran Mamdani's Win

Zohran MamdaniPresident Donald Trump labeled New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee a “100% Communist Lunatic” on Wednesday, one day after Zohran Mamdani clinched the primary.

“It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous,” the president said.

Mamdani’s victory came as a surprise to many who watched disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo lead in the polls for months. Cuomo had the backing of tech executives and billionaires, including the richest woman in the world, but Mamdani found success with his grassroots approach. He argues that the city has become far too expensive for regular people to rent apartments and buy groceries, and offers policies to lower the cost of living.

Trump assaulted Mamdani’s appearance, saying the 33-year-old “looks TERRIBLE” and “his voice is grating” before going on to call out other frequent targets of his derision.

Emil Bove, Trump's former personal lawyer, faces renewed scrutiny for federal court seat

emil bove

A top lawyer in the Department of Justice seeking a seat on the federal bench is facing allegations that he was a key player in pushing the Trump administration to ignore court orders and make sure deportation flights took off no matter what judges said.

The allegations, made by a Department of Justice whistleblower in a report obtained by USA TODAY, are now hanging over Bove's nomination by President Donald Trump to be a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, which hears appeals from Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The whistleblower, Ere Reuveni, was suspended from his job at the Department of Justice after he told a court that the Trump administration erred in deporting a Maryland man to El Salvador despite a court order to keep him in the United States. His complaint leaked the night before Bove's hearing.

David Hogg doubles down after controversy: ‘I’m not going away’

David Hogg

David Hogg is making it clear he’s not going anywhere — whether Democrats like it or not.

The 25-year-old gun control activist opted not to run again for his post at the Democratic National Committee after his decision to get involved in primaries sparked intense backlash. But Hogg has continued to be active on the political scene, meeting with New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and encouraging primary challenges for Democrats who support U.S. intervention in Iran.

While some Democrats have welcomed him back into the fold since his exit, other members of the party fear he could be a hindrance as they prepare for the midterms. Regardless of what his fellow party members think of him, though, Hogg has made it clear he’s here to stay.

“I’m not going away,” he told The Hill in his first interview since his announcement to forgo running for DNC vice chair.
